Does this Azalea Still Have a Chance? Rabbits Trunk-Chopped it to a Stub.

I planted about 20 plants around the house this fall... all the ones that usually get bit by rabbits and rats (JMs and azaleas for me) I protected the trunks with wire-fence/hardware-cloth.

I even made mini cages for all my azalea cuttings. (They decimated 60+ cuttings before this batch)

My area is fairly enclosed.. which SHOULD help with the damn rabbits (For me, they ignore Rubrums and Ginnalas and GORGE on my “Norways” 🤣) ... until they start pulling THIS crap.

If anyone has had success catching rabbits in traps, I'd love to hear your approach. Up here in Seattle they are the bane of any remotely soft leaf or flower, and they seem smart enough to avoid hopping into the cages I set out.

We have deer as well, but I have at least one shrub that has been expertly kept as a nice mound by yearly dear grazing. Free labor! So not always bad...

Most of my experience with rabbits... they were ALREADY in cages... they are not easily tricked...🤣

Easier to cut off access..

Rabbits are tasty, I've heard the same for squirrels. I've eating rabbit before, but can't do squirrel.
My grandma used to fry squirrel, then pressure cook it to make it tender. It was good, just had to be careful of breaking a tooth on the random metal pellet that might be hiding.

Cut apples work well. Lucky for you! In spring, buy leaf lettuce sets. I buy a dozen, pot them up and always have fresh young plants until late June.

My dad planted lettuce in his garden, just to watch the rabbits. He enjoyed watching the babies come nibble. No traps.
