Does anyone else name their trees?

LOL
Naw, I've only killed about 50 or so Cork Bark JBP. One Excel Spreadsheet for all plants on the inventory. (actually using Open Office these days) So the inventory of orchids, cactus, bamboo and bonsai totals some number over 1200. But this is how I know how long I've had some trees and orchids.

Yes, cork bark JBP is a passion, fascination. And I am always screwing up. The pain of trying to grow something not winter hardy in your area. I do have 6 or so alive at the moment. But all of them are still pretty young. Some 10 years ago I was getting cocky, because I had one cork bark that I managed to keep going for 18 years, it was looking pretty cool. Pushed it too hard, did too many things to it in one year, and killed it. Still have not regained the ''touch'' needed to repeat that success again. My oldest cork bark has been with me maybe 6 years. Oh well. I keep trying.
People around here have told me they seem "touchy" and are less hardy than standard JBP. I haven't tried one yet but would like to. Not sure how I'd winter it, would be tempted to keep it with most of
my trees in the heated shelter (27 F or so min). What kind of winter conditions do you keep yours in? Are they in the well house?

Yes, I started having success when I started putting them in the well house. Your heated shelter should be fine. I think / know that part of the problem is as landscape trees have matured, my yard has become more shady. All my Pines had become less and less vigorous. Pines I took to the farm, and set in full sun have picked up in vigor. So clearly, that has been part of the trouble. Anything done to a pine that is struggling because of too little sun, becomes a major set back. Problem with the farm is I tend to be there only a few days a week, sometimes going several weeks without being there. I'll figure it out eventually. May just have to pick a place to live.

The extent of me naming my trees are things like "the big larch" or "the big trident" or "the little seiju", etc, but that's about it. Just enough to distinguish them from the others.

I name my trees after people who give me advice or are just good company. I got a Grimmy quince, Fredtruck quince, 0soyoung maple, BVF pine (last one still is alive), M5 Maple, BVF Itoigawa, Anthony Hackberry, Scott Maple, RockM Elm, Bonhe ume. I have some pots Dr Hoe helped me get, I'll name whatever gets potted there after him. Like a parent I'll get their names mixed up and call them by the wrong names sometimes.

Woo-Hoo! Made the list.?
@coh and @Leo in N E Illinois if you’re interested in a corker, let me know...I could be talked out of either of these for $800 without pots, plus shipping.

Given my track record of killing off corkers, I will decline. I do have both 'Tahei' and 'Kyokko Yatsubusa', got the 'Taihei' for $45 from David Dewire. Nice low graft. Got the 'Kyokko Yatsubusa' from Brent Waldron some years ago for $65. Both were either one or two year grafts when I got them.

Both now have a few years on them, so I'll keep plodding along. By the way David Dewire separated from Dragonfly Farms and now is back to an independent nursery as WabiSabi. He can be found now on the internets.

Most of my trees are named by tree type and number (i.e. Willow Ficus #1). But I have one tree that I named because of what it looked like. I dug this tree from my back yard because the top had been damaged, so I cut it, then thought, "hm, maybe this could be an interesting bonsai". Then when I dug it, I found an interesting surprise and definitely decided to try and make a unique bonsai out of it.
What it looked like in-ground:

What I dug up:

Why I named it "Yep Yep"

These guys were side-characters in Sesame Street and constantly said "Yep Yep". Too much nostalgia, had to keep it and name it after them. No idea how to style it as a bonsai yet, but we'll see.

My nephew when young, say 7 to 10 years old, would name the neighborhood farm dogs by their shape also. There was "little dog", "Pumpkin", and the local basset hound-daschhundt mix became "Oblong Dog" it was hysterically funny, as the dog was so homely.

Tracey Ulmus?
Ulmus Therman?
Cedrus the Entertainer?
Hillier Clinton?
Olea Hardy? (as in Laural and Hardy)

might get in trouble for this one, but with being in this hobby 3 mos (its great) and seeing the title about 'naming your trees', i was going to ask about perception of people into this hobby...not that it matters.

a poll or thread along the line of 'are you married, single, gets busy or dates regularly, etc.?'

just wasnt sure of stigmas of this hobby. i had a few friends of mine reference mr miagi (sp?) i havent seen that movie or show (strictly 'the 3 ninjas' from when i was a kid)
