Do you have a preferred "side" you go for in planting?

I do. If possible, I always tend to off center the tree to the LEFT.
Maybe because we READ left to right, but looking at my trees, it is pretty consistent that I tend to try to get it positioned with a leftward bias.

How bout you?
o_O

I have thought about this with windswepts before. It bothers me having a left leaning windswept when the wind is blowing from the right so I have to turn it around for the day.

I would highly recommend this book. It has a section specifically about balancing planting location in a pot.

Principles of Bonsai Design by David De Groot

(Make sure to get the newer hardcopy version. There is an older spiral-bound version that is still available for sale called "Basic Bonsai Design" which though good, is not as good as the revised, updated edition)

I agree with Colin that it depends on the "flow" of the tree but..... when I envious a planting in my head it is usually from left to right. I think you are right @Mike Corazzi that it is because that is the way we read and maybe also the way we see the world. Maybe we scan new views from left to right as well?

I read a magazine from the back to the front. I'm not normal. Lol I've not even contemplated this theory. Will have to go look at my trees when I get home.

Now I'm wondering what they do in England where they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Just don't put the damn magazine down with the pages all folded up into a half size thing.
Ain't NOTHING more annoying than picking up a magazine that's been folded over and LEFT that way.

Well, nuclear war could be close, but it would sorta be a tossup.

You must be Japanese :) Having read a million Naruto comics, let me tell you that it isn't hard to get used to going in the other direction.

Well my nickname my dad called me was Sue-ki-uki. (middle name is Sue) Because I was born jaundice. Here I always thought it was because he was hinting I was adopted. For I look like no one in the family other than now that I'm older I see I have the Irish blue eyes and the pale skin...auburn hair.

Nope the trees I potted that are to one side...is favoring the right side of the pot. But...I have trees potted more to the left that came that way. I think...it's my OCD that just needs the tree balanced. Not more one sided or the other. The maple I have arriving it so needs planted next year left of the pot. Seen it from the get go.

None of my stuff is in a final pot, so they are mostly centered....training phase....
I'm as close to fully ambidextrous as anyone I've ever met.....I don't think I prefer a side to flow towards or from....
I guess I'll have to wait until I get to the later stages with my trees and find out where I flow to, in a nice pot.
......
I'm trying to imagine cascade style trees, which I don't have, but I think I could swing either way, honestly.
(Teed up for MLF)
