I realize that nematodes aren't technically insects, but can anyone recommend a go to "insecticide" for pine nematodes?

Pretty much all the nematicide chemicals have been banned. Except for California's use on strawberry.
You can try making your own from chlorogenic acid.

Really it’s the vector beetle, ex Pine Sawyer beetle that needs to be stopped. Once it’s in it distributes nematodes and the tree is basically toast.

Here’s a scientific article too help understand the process and issues.

Wow. Really in-depth and interesting article.

I'm just about convinced that it isn't pine wilt nematodes. I haven't seen a single beetle on or near my pines. Cut a dead branch off and saw no blue stain fugus. Saw no sign of burrowed holes. More likely that I'm using suboptimal substrate, developed root issues, and the trees didn't like it.

Can you please post an image of the tree and the media?

Cheers

They're buried in the burn pile. They were mostly young jbp about 5 years old. I also lost a 10-year-old Scots. I had so many, I tried to save money and labor by using un-sifted pine bark. There were some fines and very large pieces. I introduced a lot of new variables this year too, and it might be difficult to home in on one single issue. In another post, I mentioned that I sprayed for scale using a mixture of cooking oil, dish detergent, and alcohol. I also applied a fast acting granular 10-10-10 fertilizer. It was a small dose, but maybe I burnt the roots.
