So of the successful layers ive seen on Beech, theyre not using pure moss...
in both you can see that most moss is only on the surface and the roots are mostly growing into soil.

This layer was performed by Andrea merriggioli. On a European beech which lives in the UK. I messaged him on FB, this is what he said:
'Hello, it depends treee by tree.
Normally sphagnum, kanuma, akadama and pomice in same %'

So here's one I did earlier, nothing special, just a tester. The layer pot is mostly filled with soil, with just under an inch of top moss...
Im awaiting some soil and ill document some more layers next week...
Btw, the below is an established tree, nursery tree, pot full of roots, horrendous roots tho, but healthy.
