Colors of Fall

just for fun.

This is my just for fun ginkgo. It's obviously not a small leafed variety, but it's still cool this time of year.

First two potted sweetgum (still in trunk development). Last 2 shots, porcelain berry in ground...possible future bonsai.

Strange time of year for us, because some fall color is appearing, but many trees are also still growing:

Same here Brian. It is strange to see the leaves start changing, while new growth is still being pushed out. Plus, my JM's just darken and die off, no fall colors. Kept in full sun...could this be why I'm not getting any colors from those JMs?

Chris, what varieties are you growing? I've noticed that some of mine turn color, but on others the leaves just tend to dry and fall without really changing much.

Sounds more like they got nipped by a frost? When we lived in IA, the fall colors were never as good on my bonsai as they were in the landscape, and I think it had to do with the common, abrupt freezes. When we got to the South, it was a very pleasant surprise to have good fall colors in the pots. A few favorites from years past:

I think you're right Brian. I've been moving my trident in and out of the garage during the colder spells. I gave it a couple of light frosts, but besides that I've protected it from freezing, then moved it back into the sun during the day.

Great colors Brian. I love that hornbeam!

That could explain it some of the time, but not in my case. We haven't even had a frost yet and one of my Japanese maples (higasayama variety) is starting to show the drying leaves. Same thing happened last fall. It may have something to do with some kind of stress (too dry, too wet, too much sun...) but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Another consideration is the angle of the sun in the fall. Trees that were comfortably under the shade of a huge, high oak canopy find themselves in full sun this time of year because the sun is lower in the sky, but still pretty strong.

Here are a few from today (10/16/13). I can echo that some are turning, some are still carrying out their mission of photosynthesis. And even a few flowers from a Hibiscus and Weigela. The ones in pots are still basically green here in central Maryland. In two weeks time that will likely begin to change.

No bonsai color change yet here just north of Atlanta...BUT...there was some beautiful fall color on display at the Carolina Bonsai Expo in Asheville last weekend. The first is an A.p. 'arakawa' that belongs, I believe, to Jim Doyle. The second is a hornbeam, and I don't know who owns it, unfortunately.

Just regular JM's Chris. But I thought all JMs have pretty fall colors...

I don't think we've had a frost yet Brian. So I'll just enjoy the fall colors you all are posting ;)

Loving the pics folks. I know its not a bonsai but my blazing autumn maple this morning was looking pretty cool so I thought id share it. Im throwing one of my elms in too, but the color is not that great yet. Im not sure the color will even get that great.

Thanks for sharing guys!

I love seeing these wonderful fall colors. Sadly, I have nothing to share :( and the most color I'll probably get are the berries on my Yaupon Holly which are starting to ripen. :)
