Colorado’s Randy Knight Rocky Mountain Juniper

Nice design. It might be cool if that top branch went over and behind the jin. I can definitely see some ferns or something in front of that root ball, too.
I like this idea. The apex would be above the Jin and more visible for sure.

This tree is doing great this spring. I did some minor work on the deadwood. I think the jins are more cohesive now. Putting out spring growth and looking forward to a good growing season!

Looks like it is surprise attacking the little tree beside it 😂 I’d be hiding for sure if I was that little guy!

awesome RMJ. @Colorado, you mentioned turning this from a near-cascade to an upright in the initial repot, and I saw a bunch of sphagnum moss (?) packed in the exposed rootmass. how did you handle building the mound and its aftercare? I'm thinking of making a 70-90 degree angle change to my own RMJ, but that part of repotting is giving me pause.

and out of curiosity - are you planning on keeping the mound or eventually doing away with it and exposing the root structure?

Thanks! Yes I used spaghnum moss for the root mound. Basically the idea is to keep that portion of the roots alive for long enough to help transition the angle change.

Now that it’s been in the pot for a couple years, I am working on reducing that mound. This spring I removed all the old spaghnum and whittled away at the mound. Problem is that there is that huge root which feeds the entire root system that is sticking straight up 😂.

I have thought about planing some little sedums or something in the mound to make it look more natural but I’m not really sure. I think more likely I’ll just expose the root structure over the course of the next couple years and it will be an “exposed root” of sorts.

Very nice, wild and charismatic tree, it looks like a tree styled by Ryan Neil (who loves to keep wildness & long jins) 😍
How tall is it ?

Thanks for the kind words!

I just measured it and it is 34 inches from the bench to the top of the jin.

I have spent a lot of time studying/watching Ryan Neil’s work, so I appreciate your comment very much!
