First off. Where in Michigan are you? You're either near me or in the U.P.
I just started digging the Jacks up last year. Out of 8 4 are alive. All collected in spring. Going to try summer collecting this weekend. Fall is out for the reasons you stated. It's only 3 weeks long.
I've just been digging them up the regular way. Dig to the diameter of the bucket it's going in. They like their roots to not be messed with too much.
The sand is a problem. They like it. I'm thinking about trying ones on the edge of wet areas. They may have compact root systems.
 
I've found a couple great areas with some good jacks for bonsai... open ground, compact roots, somewhat stunted. all have came out like I've mentioned before, with ease. Both of mine are in grow bags. good to know you are getting 50% in spring collecting, that's good data. both of mine had compact roots, collected from 2 completely different areas. I was going to go after a couple other really old gnarly barked Jacks but they seemed to have deep deep tap roots, unlike the others. found this little refugee on the trail and moved him to safety, saw his 2 parents from very close as well. first warbler encounter.

I would like to see pictures of the trees. I hate to say it but you are probably in violation of the law in touching that bird. The last I heard you almost had to avert your eyes in its presence. Just joking.
 
you probably right, the bird was in danger of being ran over and I almost ran him over myself without even knowing. there was a porcupine that got hit by an atv right next to it about 5 minutes prior because it was still alive. didn't know it was a warbler until i picked it up, then I noticed the 2 parents. I moved it to safety 5 feet from where I found it.
 
I'm sure you did the right thing. Did you know that even picking up a feather from a Bald Eagle out in the desert can land you in jail? What a world.
 
hah, slightly in tune to that, my uncle is a falconer, and works in conservation. I found and brought home some red tailed hawk feathers as a kid once and my dad said it was illegal and made me get rid of it.

The whole time I've lived here I've only seen one.
People come from all over the world to get a glimpse of one and go home empty handed.
You're lucky.

poor porcupine :(

I assume it was fatally wounded?
 
actually im not even sure, he seemed ok really, he was breathnig and sitting there, im just pretty sure he got hit. but I've seen other porcupines that just breathe and sit there too so idk.

yea until they maim your dog like a pin cushion. had it happen before, it was brutal. that little one is cute tho, you right.
 
Kalkaska area, right near the 4/5 border....i think where i'm collecting might be considered a 5....close either way. On, a diff note did someone turn the lights off outside? We have warnings for 60 Mph winds :( I hope my whips and tall stumps make it.

One thing I will say about birds is I've seen much more Blue jays and few northern flickers this year since I've collected trees....they like sitting on the stumps and bark at the cat.
 
Looked at your photos. Couldn't help but notice native knickinick there. Do you come across good candidates ever?
 
ahh googled it, now I know what your are talking about, well I haven't explored the idea for bonsai, but I can tell you they are easy collect-able becasue I have them living in my pine rootball, and they, very clearly, recovered from collection and sprung back up. almost immediately @Arcto
 
and now I see what your name means, and now you got me curious. lemme see one of your bonsai Arcto, @Arcto.
