Have you identified aspects that contributed to the successful cuttings?

LUCK ... The cuttings that looked good failed... other growers in South Africa seem to have success...
those 6 cuttings in the photo, for example were all treated the same (dusted with the same flowers of sulphur ,
planted next to each other, and only the 1 took)

That's gonna be awesome, the starting shape looks like it'll be a perfect miniature. I wish I could grow them here in NY.

Seeing this thread always gives me climate envy haha. I wish I could ground grow my baobabs or be able to collect young specimens. Oh well

interesting to me that all these 1 year old seedlings did not go dormant, the soil stayed water logged in the pot they were in...i have planted the smaller ones (in my hand) in a smaller, shadier growbed and the larger ones in a sunnier garden... we are now at the end of winter and the big trees will only grow end October...

because i have had access to thick material i have never tried...
i have seen 1 successful fusion - he tied them tight with cable ties and planted in the ground...
he reckons they would not have fused in a pot??

I really want to try fusing some - as there really is no access to thicker material here.
However, I'm not sure how to deal with thick root and slim stem.

I'll definitely try some in the ground - thanks!

3 years ago i cut the roots back WAAAAY too much (post 52) and this tree has been stunted ever since... i am grafting a seedling into the trunk to hopefully get more growth on a now 1 sided tree...

A lot depends on your climate. your trees look super for 2 years old... leave the roots alone for as long as you can - you want them to grow out into the ground as then the trees explode...if you have to overwinter them inside just keep doing what you are doing.

They are dormant now, changed the substrate and raised them in the pot. Half of the main root is raised outside of the substrate, so they will have more space to develop next year

looking back through this thread, i realise how important letting trees grow into the ground is.The 2 trees i am going to highlight can both be seen in post #71 exactly 2 years ago: black pot right hand side is now double the size
