I launched a website (AppalachianPlantworks.com) and I'd love for you to check it out :)

Hey y'all. I've been selling trees (mostly starts and a few prebonsai) for a couple years now on the auction sites. But over 2024 I spent what little free time I had building out a website for Appalachian Plantworks to make the weekly photography/admin overhead a little less onerous. I had planned to launch in autumn, but with Hurricane Helene impact, I had to delay until this spring. Anyhow, it's been live for a few weeks now and going quite well. It is mostly geared towards beginners and those looking for starter material, but I would welcome visits from folks here along with any feedback you have to offer. Thanks so much!
Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this question (new to the community and bonsai in general) I was planning on immediately doing a repot for all three of them into 10x10x10 pond baskets and letting them grow out in there. I am planing to bonsai them and would like to thicken the trunks up a bit. I cant plant them in the ground unfortunately. I was planning on putting them directly into a 1:1:1 substrate of Pumice, Lava Rock, 1/4" bark (or something similar composition) to grow. These will be my first real attempt at growing out some bonsai candidates on my own. I am sure you are extremely busy with the new business (congrats by the way) so don't feel pressured to respond, but any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!! I am located in southern IN, 7a.

I purchased a Japanese Maple, European Beech, and Korean Hornbeam.

The site looks great and nice variety and options-- glad you are doing this :)

Just ordered a few and have my eye on that apple now! Thank you! I left Asheville a few years ago will be glad to have a part of it with me here :)

Sure that should be fine. I'm personally not too picky about soils. If it were me I would go more like 1:1:1 pine bark fines, akadama, pumice mixed in. I just tend not to use much lava. A lot of it really is personal preference around appearance, watering schedule, and what's available to you. The only important thing I'd note though is don't do much more than slip potting. Real repotting should be done in spring before leaf out. Best of luck!

Got my forest last night. Looks great - I will get around to pics and start a thread for it. Packaging was Fort Knox and the pot was seatbelted to the box. And, oh yes, those lovely packing peanuts. Better than advertised and would buy from here again. Now I have to figure out what to do with a forest

That is great to hear! That is a killer pot you got with the forest too. Always appreciate a safe delivery follow up and even moreso a thread lol! Thanks for your support.

Trees arrived and look great, wonderful service. Thanks for the insight here btw, I am completely new to bonsai. The main reason I was asking about repotting was to mitigate the wind we get where I live... sometimes it can be terrible for days/weeks on end and I wanted to ensure the trees were in larger, heavier pots to help mitigate them falling over.

You can set up rocks or bricks around pots or tie them down to bench. Rocks and bricks generally work well for me with shorter wide pots (cut down nursery pots)

With regard to slip potting, do you recommend using a similar soil to what they came in?

i bought from him off facebook a couple of times. quality material for the price.

Any special secret code for BNUT members? ;)
I take care of my folks as best I can but I'm only in my second full year of the nursery, so I'm still trying to figure out how to turn a profit :) I'll probably be doing some seasonal sales and may do a forum-specific sale here and there for b-nut and the bonsai subreddit. Stay tuned!

Prices seem fair and nice selection.. keep doing what you are doing, always nice to have a place to scan for new material.

In the top 3 largest orders I've ever gotten - I appreciate your support and hope you enjoy them. You bought just in time to catch some of those blooms - a few might be opening up on their way to you!
