Well I don't have a lot of bonsai experience, but my potted plants in general have done fine in 10-20 below weather as long as the roots are insulated like rockm said, although it really depends on the species of trees for how well they do. If your trees are native or hardy to your zone, I wouldn't worry too much, but -3 is a bit chilly for your area. When it got down to 20 below over here last week, I just added another inch or 2 of mulch and buried all of my trees almost completely in snow, and will probably leave them that way for at least the rest of January.
