Well, it's not like I have much to loose.... but I'm guessing 25 below zero is gonna kill what I do have. lol
That wind chill or actual air temp. Plants don’t feel wind chill. What they get is windburn from dry winds (extremely cold air is extremely dry for the most part). Shelter the roots. Make sure the plants are out of the windWell, it's not like I have much to loose.... but I'm guessing 25 below zero is gonna kill what I do have. lol
I just looked again, they were talking about wind chill temps. That wind chill or actual air temp. Plants don’t feel wind chill. What they get is windburn from dry winds (extremely cold air is extremely dry for the most part). Shelter the roots. Make sure the plants are out of the wind
I kind of put mine under a cold-frame, if you could call it that. lolWell I don't have a lot of bonsai experience, but my potted plants in general have done fine in 10-20 below weather as long as the roots are insulated like rockm said, although it really depends on the species of trees for how well they do. If your trees are native or hardy to your zone, I wouldn't worry too much, but -3 is a bit chilly for your area. When it got down to 20 below over here last week, I just added another inch or 2 of mulch and buried all of my trees almost completely in snow, and will probably leave them that way for at least the rest of January.
Any of mine left outside are wearing a windbreaker of ice right now. What they get is windburn from dry winds
Will they survive?Any of mine left outside are wearing a windbreaker of ice right now.
If you have a sort of cold frame that blocks some of the wind and provides some insulation that should be good. I didn't have any space I really wanted to dig out either, so I just made a large wooden box with an open bottom that I put my trees in that I filled in with mulch, and I haven't had any problems with the cold so far, but also my greenmound juniper is my LEAST coldhardy tree right now, most of my trees are siberian elms that I collected because they grow everywhere around here and are almost impossible to kill and a couple ERC that I plan on using mostly for wiring practice.I kind of put mine under a cold-frame, if you could call it that. lol
Don't have anywhere to dig unfortunately, but they are sitting on the ground.
Honestly, I think I’d rather have -10F temps than 120, way too hot for me! I guess we’re kind of like trees here and go dormant in the winter and get used to the cold temps. Unfortunately, I’m not gonna have a big growth spurt in the Spring though, so I’m stuck being shortI guess you all take such temps in your stride but that is crazy cold, especially for someone who grew up down here.
As a contrast, we are experiencing a heatwave this week. Forecast daytime temps around 40C all week.
43 (109) here tomorrow, 39s (102) for a couple of days then back to 40 (104)
Forecast record highs in the north-west of my state, up to 49C (120F)
Shade cloth is up over most of the deciduous, watering twice a day and the bonsai I usually hand water are tucked in the nursery under automatic watering just in case I have to head off to any fires at short notice.
All the best for all you icebound northerners.
Should be fine, but time will tell. Will they survive?
