Hey guys so I’m coming at you with yet another boxwood. These things are all over the place at my parents house that they just bought and they hate them and want to replace them with flowering shrubs and what not. So I figured I’d hack it up and see what it can become. Not sure about that first branch or secondary trunk. Should I chop it shorter? Get rid of it completely? Anyway the base of the trunk had me interested. This one was in a small planter probably 10x30 inches and had filled the entire container with roots. Very fine root structure do to the pot. Anyway thought I’d just post it on here and see if the experiences see any potential. It’s hard for me to imagine what something can become after 5-10 years so it’s nice to hear from you guys!
Let me know what you think below.

I'd aim to layer it at the widest point above the....the .....split?

Which they say might not take more than just planting it that deep.

Reckon, the time it takes for those roots to be enough to cut up to, will coincide right closely with the next time you should worry any much about the top.

Could be 3-5 maybe 7 years.

I got a feeling you have Access to stuff worth more of your time.

Perhaps something not dead straight?

Yeah it is pretty boring isn’t it?
But at the moment I’m home with no work so I’m basically just planting anything and everything I find to practice hacking things up and keeping things alive for now.

Well with all your enthusiasm I would suggest some research on what characteristics to look for in selecting material for Bonsai. Time spent learning about suitable nebari, trunk flare and taper, movement versus straight sections, bark characteristics and growth patterns.
A quick guide is if you examine a Bonsai judges sheet that indicates what percentage of the total score is awarded to common characteristics of each species. Understanding this aspect will help you select material worth spending years developing!
The boxwood above has poor nebari, poor straight trunk sections and tends to be a very slow growing species that makes it difficult to correct major flaws. On the positive side is usually smaller leaves and easily developed root base for Bonsai purposes.
Just some thought

I’ve been doing a lot of research on the trees themselves lately trying to figure out what trees are native to my area but not much on choosing the correct material. I know some things to look for but just haven’t came across something great yet. For now I’m just trying to experiment with what I find around the yard until I can find some trees to take more seriously. I was just helping out at my parents place and they have a lot of boxwoods they are taking out soon so I thought I’d chop them up and see if they survive.
