Bougainvillea - Barbara Karst

That looks a lot like how one of my bougainvillea started out. I found that with graceful movement like that, creating a low, broad crown right at the top, sort of like an African acacia tree, shows the flowers and trunkline well. Here is mine a few weeks ago:View attachment 350907

Thank you! It was determining “apex standard” that actually prompted me to prune this way.. that’s actually a form of what I was planning on!

Ended up taking it a different direction.. but she REALLY wants to go outside.
Also, about 9 weeks ago.. I took 4 cuttings... I now have.. 4 young bougie plants.

That’s what happens here! Well.. in my decently-set-up indoor area... big spurts in september, december and february!..

They don’t really abide by a set “schedule”.. I think they grow on advantage... both health/environmental-wise.

Sooo the Bougie ALSO suffered slightly at the hands of both Wisconsin’s Rollercoaster (winter)Spring, aaaaand it’s owner’s antsiness to bring trees outside...

But all is alright...

I am (enjoyably) currently in the process/phase of transitioning plants that were purchased or grown indoors over the colder season, outdoors.
Soon enough it will be prime(esque) climate conditions (I guess merely acceptable, in Wisconsin) that my bougainvillea will be able to actually get a tan.
During this aforementioned acclimation process, my plant room became very lonely and I noticed how unruly this bougie’s growth has become. I decided to treat it to a haircut in preparation for the outdoor season.

This thread is mostly just for me , to aid in the analysis of this particular plant’s progression.

So here she is... before after maintenance prune.. I plan on watching her grow for a season or two before approaching any kind of design or branch selection.
(As she is VERY young and has just begun her journey)

Red flowers, This was grown near the ocean in Huntington Beach, CA. The salty air just beautifies the trunk. I brought this to Florida and removed all the unwanted deadwood and removed all growth. Now retired to Florida my passion for bonsai is now an addiction. Enjoy your day and I love your bougainvillea!

No rock, that is actually deadwood that I kept and applied lime sulphur. Red flowers.

My parent's just, this fall, moved down to FLA in the Tampa Area (about 35 min north of)... It took then a while to find VA doctors they liked.. but it got done.

I like every species I don’t have I was a paramedic and a helicopter pilot. I also had 2 bonsai businesses. SoCal is hot and dry. Florida is hot and humid. The main difference where I am at ( Ocala National Forest) is that there is no smog and I have well water for my bonsai’s. It really makes a huge difference.
