This showed up in my Facebook feed. Has anyone heard of this? It's bonsai workshops that are conducted in breweries and taprooms. It looks like it's for newbs (and looks like just Portulacaria and Schefflera), but I LOVE this idea!! What a great way to combine two of my favorite things! Now if they could just add skate ramps and heavy metal... 🤔

Not in my area but I've heard not-so-great reviews from some forum user here. He wouldn't elaborate unfortunately.

I've seen their advertisements on my social feeds, they do events at the local breweries around here. They charge $100 for a 2 hour session and a small p.afra. It is definitely aimed at casual people looking for a "date night" type activity, not for serious bonsai hobbyist. They seem to get good turn outs, so hopefully it brings more people in!

I had an in-depth conversation with the owner Tim Arsenault about 3 months back. I was going to design modular work stations for classes held at there home base in Rhode Island. Basically work benches for up to 2 people per station, with room for removable bins for soil, tool caddies, wire etc. He offered me a several thousand dollar retainer to start the work. I was going to move forward but was given this amazing opportunity for a big career shift that I took and have been working in for several months now and just wouldn't have had time for that type of side work. Tim is a really great dude though and the people that work for him also all seem great. He's got some decently large financial backing and has classes that run in several states. Wether its of what we would consider super high level bonsai or not, is irrelevant if you ask me. They clearly know the basics and more and are enthusiastic about the art and as @ZombieNick said, it is more about the idea of bringing more people into the hobby.

I've made some very questionable bonsai decisions while under the influence. Haha.
It’s why I don’t smoke weed THEN wire bonsai anymore. But man. I bet that could be a winner of bonsai class for some folks.

Seriously. I don't smoke very often anymore, but definitely wouldn't before taking concave cutters to an expensive tree. What seems "totally awesome!" when you're high, might turn into "what did I do?" when you're sober.

I was walking out of the PBE with the Colorado Blue Spruce I bought from Todd Schlafer, and this guy's like, "Dude! Lot's of possibilities with that one. Smoke a J and start styling!" Ummm... bad idea with my $1000 tree.

Maybe study the tree with some herbal enhancement to get those creative juices flowing, but step away from the cutters.

Many years ago, I discovered that my bonsai skills like wiring and especially pruning become dangerous after a few tokes or a few beers. My talking game goes up, but my actual skill goes way down. And with the current costs of DUI or DWI traffic charges should give one pause to think.

I image there are a fairly large number of us who really don't want to be around booze for either medical or legal reasons. So its a nice idea, but definitely a niche idea.

A few folks in my club teach for them. Was thinking off applying to teach as well.

Trees and Chong! That gets my vote.

Yes, a friend of mine does "plant nights" which usually involves succulents but he has done a few that were bonsai oriented.
There is a group somewhere in New England that does them. Edit: I see some of the people on that website are in New England
Yes it is very beginner focused

This is pretty funny. We have had both a Beer and Bonsai and Bubbles and Bonsai at PBM for a couple years now. Sounds like maybe a riff on these classes.

Our folks work on junipers. Looks like these folks work with Jade types.

As one can imagine, lots of fun. Not a lot of intensity. Just an intro. It’s an other effort to bring young and old into the fold.

Also heard Amazon brings in folks for bonsai workshops as a team building activity.

Cheers
