Got 10 cypress seedlings from our state nursery last spring. Potted 7 of them. Have 6 left (Caesar killed one). Didn't have enough O'Reilly ultra-sorb and pine bark fines for all, so 3 of the survivors were planted in the sifted ultra-sorb/pine bark and the other 3 in a mix of compost, sand, vermiculite, peat and perlite. A few are senescing (turning brown). But it's a deciduous tree, so that's expected. But the 3 turning brown are the 3 in the more poorly drained soil mix. Those 3 in the "bonsai soil" are still all dark green. They're swamp trees. I didn't figure a more poorly drained medium would be a problem for them.
If those 3 survive, guess I'll repot in a better draining mix come spring.

I doubt it matters what they are planted in. The bonsai soil may make the roots easier to deal with. Most ppl that have large collected BCs keep them in potting soil or whatever is cheapest to buy. Usually drainage is a non issue because their pot is sitting in a larger pot with no drainage and filled completely with water. Mine have been sitting in the same standing water all summer and are doing fine, no drainage whatsoever.
