This is a satsuki I got from a local nursery in San Jose. I've had it 4 y. Set it back a little by almost bare rooting it the spring I bought it. Wouldn't do that again with an azalea!
Just wanted to share the blooms. This is the first year I've let it flower.
I would not call this a bonsai or even a pre bonsai yet. These plants are pretty slow in pots. Could use ground for 10-20 y!

P.s. There's a 2011 photo and 2 from today.

Lovely flowers, but with blooms that size you may want to just let the plant grow into them.

Actually I am surprised it made it! Wonderful blooms!

Yes it was a silly thing to do (bare root.) it's not like you get much out of it either. The roots are so fine you lose the majority of them. Also its not like it's going to give me an azalea with amazing nebari! Anyway... Live and learn! Some trees you can bare root, others not so much! Thanks for the comments. Ian
Photo is from 2011 I think

When you bare root an azalea (which you almost never do) you remove all of the fine roots. They'll just die anyway. The normal way to repot an azalea is with pie-shaped slices taken from the root ball.
