Smoke, that's the list of acceptances. Not the list of all that submitted candidates.
What I am wondering is if 55 percent of all submissions were from the States you mentioned.
Were 55 percent of the 300 total submitted from the Pac NW and Cali?
I am sorry to see BVF's tree didn't make it.... Maybe there is something to the rumors about Bjorn and Owen and the village boys??
55 percent were from the trees accepted. 39 trees out of 70 came from Oregon, Wasington State and Cali.Smoke, that's the list of acceptances. Not the list of all that submitted candidates.

Just noticing this:Everything nowadays is a conspiracy...
If a bear poops in the woods, folks here would want to know if it was Pacific NW woods?
Or Georgia woods...

I usually don’t get involved the the machinations of the high-stakes bonsai “scene,” nor the personalties and politics behind such things. It’s just not my sort of thing. I’m not even involved in the local club. But recently - from several different sources - I have heard variations on the following details. One person has even suggested that I or someone else should do an investigative report on the matter. That doesn’t really interest me, but I thought I’d post this possible rumor to see if there might be any truth behind it.
- If I understand correctly, the Portland Artisans Cup is - by its very name - being promoted as an "artisans" competition.
- If I understand correctly, the Pacific Rim Collection has five entries.
- If I understand correctly, the Pacific Rim Collection is not an "artisan," but a collection of other people's work.
- If I understand correctly, the Pacific Rim Collection purchased a very expensive tree styled by Ryan Neil around the time it made its entries.
- If I understand correctly, Dave De Groot, the recent curator of the Pacific Rim Collection, is one of the judges for the Artisans Cup.
Any truth to any of this, and does anyone think it should matter?
Here's an idea- Let's see your submitted trees that were NOT accepted (Thanks Adair for posting yours). How about a Bonsai Nut Cup (lol) of our own. Maybe a non-political judgement will help your submission for next year.
I'd be ignoring it now if it weren't for the fact that, if what several different people say is true, it smells a bit fishy, and it's a big deal if something this big smells a bit fishy. I was actually hoping for someone here to say that the facts I was given were wrong, and specifically the ways in which they were wrong, because the allegations are troubling - but it sounds like you can't be helpful in that regard. Maybe someone can: I'd be very happy to hear that the factual info I was given is wrong.
Just wow, sir! - I mean, you've just got to know how sensitive and susceptible I am to that kind of snarky put-down, and how completely, painfully devastating your world-class-wit has been to my delicate psyche . . .
Truth is, several people encouraged me to submit some trees back when this thing was first set up. I typically couldn't care less about such things anyway (as mentioned above), but the entry requirements were a big turn off, so I did what I usually do - I ignored it. There was a black bear in my neighbor's back yard 2 weeks ago....and it's a "wooded" back yard.
