ARBOR DAY $12 donation and survey for 12 free trees including crabapples, hawthorne, and Dogwood trees

@NMbonsai, thanks for the tip. Might have to give it a shot one day. There are several BC planted around one of the hospitals in Lubbock. They are very healthy, and I'd estimate at least 30 to 40 years old. Lubbock climate isn't quite as hot in the summer, but temperatures aren't that far off from our temperatures here. It's doable, but I think I need more experience before I venture into that kind of challenge. Montezuma cypress sounds more my speed right now.

So, I was wondering about the status of my order. I checked via my confirmation email, and my trees should ship between...

...November 12 and December 19.
WHAT!?
I'm pretty new to a lot of this, but the beginning of winter doesn't seem ideal for bare-root trees. Waiting that long is bad enough, but am I thinking wrong about the time of year?

The Arbor Day folks not being into natives is a longstanding issue. They have long been criticized for promoting Colorado Blue Spruce nationwide. Their motto seems to be “any tree is a good tree” with no thought given to what can or should be grown in a given area. They seem to think more trees=good and have been long criticized for not being actually interested in real conservation.

Mine this year weren't good.
Only 2 crabapples and 1 crepe myrtle are alaive. The rest are dead.
One of the hawthorns was top down in the baggie with gel... even the one that was roots down is dead...

My only options were 10 ERC (in New Mexico, seriously? Just because it  can live here doesn't mean it should live here, or that it will ever thrive.) or 10 eastern redbud. Gee, Arbor Day, thanks for the immense selection! Oh, well. I always liked redbud anyway. Maybe one of them will be delivered alive and I can someday turn it into something that people can stand to look at.

Out of 10 crepe myrtles, 7 of mine lived. My wife donated also so we got 10 bald cypress, and only one if those survived

I got 10 BC and 7 survived. I'm 100% sure it's my fault though. I cut the taproot down and planted in too shallow a tub, so the top roots were exposed. I feel lucky that 7 pushed leaves.

Most of mine survived, didn't have time to pot for a few days so snipped the tap roots stuck them all in a vase of water for like 2 or 3 days. I'll have to look and see what survived, but I think only a few gave up the ghost. My gf donated as well so we got double the trees also.

I was mistaken; I was reading the wrong place in the email.
I chose 10 flowering trees, species unnamed, not 10 redbuds. Still shipping at the end of autumn.

That's when they sent mine, saying it was the best time to plant in my climate.🤔 They're still in the garage and I'm not sure any of them are going to make it....
