These are a little better pictures of what I’m working with. I’m hoping for good deadwood and back budding along the very top branch! Please any feedback is much appreciated!
Yeah mine too. Winters get cold here in the northeast US. I may have to do the shuffle into the garage with these to keep that tender new growth from getting frostbitten before it hardens off. Its been quite warm still for october but I expect that to change in the next few weeks.
There's not a lot of foliage on that. The trunkline is cool though. I hope it makes it.Lifted this crazy spruce. Time is tight, hoping for a bit of luck.

Good ole Maine... one of my favorite statesJack pine and larch, going back for more soon
I just recived permission to collect this maple so I am go for spring of 2018!This is the one I'll be dreaming about this winter. Sugar maple on the property I manage. It's about 3" before the root flair and enters the soil at 5.5".
I have heard that the leaves don't reduce well, but they just glow in the fall.

One of the trees neighbors. To big to collect, but look at that corky bark. Amazing variation on trees in the same plot.

Now I have transplanted pleanty of trees, But I have never collected an understory tree with bonsai goals in mind. Do I play it safe, say 26" diameter rootball dropped in a garden bed, or trust the vigor of the tree and make the big cuts now? A couple years ago I collected an Amur of similar size growing in full sun, whacked the roots into a 10" bare root spread and the tree responded well. Would the same treatment applied to this tree be a death sentence? Trunk diameter is about 3", height 20' growing in a nice clay loam.
Thanks for the reassurance.Trust it bud. As buds swell start to swell, chop to 2/3rds or a bit higher than the hight your wanting ( so about 15"?), Dig it, cut any big roots, wash off and stick it in good soil. Should go wild.
Thanks for the reassurance.
Always nice to have advice from someone who's been there and done it.
Difficult for larch to backbud typical? Only have three young out into ground with no major work done yet. Planning to collect within the next month up in Charlevoix/Petoskey at a friends cabin, fields of larch. Would you recommend timing? Bringing them 3 hours south to GR.Chubby mother daughter larch i dug up today.. That box is 16x12 inches.View attachment 161594
Rare they back bud. So find ones with low branches. Collect any time from now thru Sept, leave lots of growth at collection so itll help fuel new roots thru the fall. And keep them right out in direct sun. No shade needed. Unless we get a hot spell just to keep roots coolDifficult for larch to backbud typical?
