You might want to remove all of the growth coming off of the “entry” side of the graft and only leave the growth on the “exit” part (the part you eventually want to keep).
It should be a completely bare shoot/whip with growth only on the future branch part.

I picked it up in Marky Scott’s Ebihara maples thread and have used it on every graft I’ve done so far

Lowest graft clearly took and I started to reduce the entry side. I’ll let the other graft speculate a bit more before working it down.
