Another Itoigawa

I love that "happy as a pig in s" smile!

Well deserved.

The trunk lines are amazing, and with a Bjornish Head......
Well, it goes without saying.

Give me a day or so and I'll share a bit more of the process. In short, Bjorn absolutely has a recognizable style, so I had a good idea of what we'd finish with, and it was what I wanted. This is my third opportunity to work with him, and we were both familiar with the tree. We made a plan last year to pump it up and prepare it for work this year. It's been refined and shown in the past, most recently 5 years ago; so the primary branches/bones were apparent. We discussed movement; does it move right or left, I wanted a more dramatic movement to the left, but the challenge is to get movement to the left, while keeping the first right branch, since the right-most live vein only runs to that branch, and the vein is important...so the branch has to stay to keep the vein. No sketches, but negotiated the plan over a cup of coffee and then off to the races.

Prune first: up and down growing stuff, stuff in the crotches, and leggy wispy growth. Prune bottom to top, keeping laterally forked shoots. Wire bottom to top. Wire a section out to the tips, set it, then clean up the undersides of pads, and trim each tuft so they are about equal in mass and strength. (You'll be surprised how full it still looks from various angles, because everything has a spot in the sun). The trick is making it look even, while still placing the pads without goofy bends.

More in a day or so. I'm thrilled with the result; great day, great tree.
Thanks Brian! That is valuable info for sure... I know a lot of people look at a tree like this and think "boy I'd love to make mine look that good" but they don't even know where to start!

You should be thrilled with the result- that is an amazing one day transformation and exactly what this tree needed.. Great work!

Also worth mentioning, Bjorn is launching a beginner course online; video, laid out in chapter form....watch, pause, do, watch more. Very exciting, shot in Japan, and expertly produced by him and Oscar of Bonsai Empire. Preregistration is cheap $15; for all 3 lectures on demand, yours forever. Check it out:

I better learn to read. I just did the pre-registering and realized it's for beginners. For $15 though it's worth it even if you just pickup one or two pointers. I probably still take the course but I hope he goes into some more advanced techniques.

I registered too. Although it says it's for beginners, the techniques are universally applicable, and he's working on world-class trees. Something for everyone. He also encouraged people to buy the series and show it at club meetings.

Really special Brian. You must be overjoyed with the outcome. So great to see hard work rewarded with such great results.
Does the online course touch on D trees, or is this mostly conifer/evergreen based sessions? I find that there isn't nearly as much teaching going on for deciduous as for evergreens.

Really nice job Brian, the tree's a stunner for sure! Congrats!

Looks great, Brian! Are you going to get it "photographed"? I'd love to see this fine tree with a clean background and the live vein oiled up.

Very nice work Brian, it's come a long way. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.

I've been doing the bonsai thing for going on 2 decades, and after about 10 years, I found that many trees that once seemed special or made me do a double take just didn't hold my interest like they did previously. Still, every once in a while, a tree really catches my eye and sings to me. This is one of those trees. I was serious about the Portland comment....it deserves to be there.

Thanks Dave; means a lot. It is tempting to submit for the Cup, but it has a few rather visible guy-wires, and is definitely not in a show pot. I still have a few days to decide...

Brian, how many hours did it take you two to wire the tree?

How many hours do you think it will take to get it off?
And, the title to this thread needs to be changed - this isn't 'another itoigawa' anymore.
Funny...because it isn't an Itoigawa either! Gary Wood and Bjorn both say it's Kishu; and "on the good end of the Kishu spectrum." Meaning it doesn't "ball up" too much. Kishu or standard shimpaku, but Itoigawa it isn't.

It will probably take 2 hours to unwire.

Looking back at the old threads on this tree, I think this new styling was a huge improvement.
