A serious discussion about building intrest in bonsai for the 15-35 crowd

Is there some way to confirm that? Not that an obituary would give a cause of death, but I can't even find that.
I can't for the life of me understand why you need some sort of confirmation. The guy died from a lung infection from the materials he was working with.

He died in the early 90's before much of anything, much less obituaries, were put online. That doesn't make it some conspiracy.

Apprentice ----------- one who is paid a small sum /meals/ clothing by a Master to be allowed to train.
Chores are at first just basic and one works one's way up.

It is not a you pay the Master situation, that's school.

Works fine for the Japanese Gvt. as it brings in foreign exchange, so of course they will smile on Bonsai.

Secondly, Bonsai is mumbled as being an Art ------------ how many of the Masters actually have done any art
and are not just redoing the old redoing ?

Bonsai is a hobby, and not many have the time or interest in watering and pruning plants.

@rockm,
there is another chap on Youtube using the Batchelder technique.
We have the book, but were warned about something called ------ sudden death - by I believe Jerry Meislick,
on IBC.

Tried the idea with our Cocoa moss and it worked for the 3 years I believe the plant was grown in just
cocoa moss.

Plus, isn't the sphag moss sterilised by steam ?

I've seen that new program. Not really all that...

I'm not saying there's a conspiracy, I'm saying people have confidently attributed a cause of death to him, and I don't know where they got the information from. Apparently, neither do you.

Dude, I've been doing bonsai for some time, including when the program was on. He was known by local bonsai folks. Believe me, not drug related.

I think you've hit upon the idea...bonsai needs it's own Bob Ross. Instead of "anyone can paint", "anyone can do bonsai." Happy little trees!

I think it would be a hard sell to get it on somewhere but it would be real easy to get a workable show happening, there are any number of existing formats that would work so you just need to fill the content in. Practically writes itself. Not sure what sort of gardening shows you have in the USA but I can easily see a bonsai themed show in the format of 'Gardeners World' or 'Gardening Australia' working, I'm sure there are other shows but those two are ones I watch.
Plus a show like that with smaller segments can appeal to everyone on all levels. People will watch it simply because it is on if nothing else. Instant audience.

Probably an even easier sell would be one of those gimicky type of elimination type shows like 'Bake off' or 'Masterchef'.
Over here they go nuts for that sort of thing. I mean they now have them about pottery, sewing, choirs and other oddball choices so I imagine this is quirky enough to get it's own show. Might even be worth pitching the production companies this, who knows where a random tweet may lead.

But yeah, youtube has been mentioned and you may have to start making a series for youtube at first but at least then there is a finished show to pitch.

Fine. But don't imply I'm a nut for seeing season 2 and wondering about that. That was weird.

I personally think the issue is much bigger in Japan because it is tied into culture and history.

I will say that over 20 years ago I had a couple of early experiences with Japanese masters (here in the US) and neither was positive. I respect both for their skills and their experience, but neither one inspired me or motivated me in the slightest. I came away thinking - I will still enjoy bonsai despite my experience with these two individuals. How sad that two people who could have been ambassadors for bonsai actually created such a negative impression. Had I been a little younger or a little less self-confident, they might have actively driven me away from bonsai with their bad attitudes and self-importance.

Uh, OK, it may be weird, but even though the dead can't be libeled or slandered, you might want to consider implying, with no evidence, that the guy had drug problems. The dead can't defend themselves, so speculation like that can take on a life of its own.

Have you seen what I'm talking about? I'm talking about something very specific. I assumed you you watched the entire series. If you haven't, then I'll explain if you actually care. If not, never mind.

Good lord, Again, the guy died of sporotichosis, regardless of some symptom you deduced from a videotape or from PBS.

If you want you can track down his relatives and ask them to confirm his cause of death...

This was a response to your digression about drug use evidence and what was going on in season 2, not specifically about his cause of death anymore.

To answer my own question, no...you have no idea what I'm talking about. No problem.

Moving on.

Ok, sure, moving on...

Ok guy's can you take the thread litter to your own thread or private messages. Nobody wants to read all that when trying to find legitimate conversation on a serious thread.

Bnut - what is it ------ you evil foreigner, no sharing.

Before you wonder about that, I will tell you what happens to Trinidadian born Chinese of China Chinese parents
in Canada, when meeting Chinese from China.

They get snobbed, because they speak no form of Chinese.

A few were not allowed to see Chinese practices such as Tree Penjing.

So my hat is off to you for just doing.
Good Day

* What Chinese parents from China tell their children in Trinidad ----------------- you are not Chinese.
You are not allowed to learn Gung Fu or Tree Penjing [ 1890's ] or ...........................................

To the OP, I think your motivations are really great. I agree with others though that it's probably a hard sell for the 15-35 crowd - hormones, college, job, young kids, lack of permanent digs with yard space.

Friendly advice -
