A Japanese maple

Beautiful !

I would reduce the top though. I think it's tall enough, and the top of a tree should, in my view, look like a "broom", if you see what I mean.

That's the plan. I'm hoping to get some back budding that will allow me to remove the branching with long internodes. It should look much tighter in a year or two.

snow's fine, as long as air temp and pot temp remain above freezing. This is a very tough spring. We were 90 F three days ago, now lows are predicted in the mid-30's...
The temps were above 38 F 90 minutes ago... 20 minutes into the snow and it was 33... tree's back in the workshop until tomorrow!

Ummmmm……. 😩

I sympathize : we've had several days around or even above 20° C - 68°F (here, near Orléans) and nights no lower than 6° C - 42.8 °F.

Rather unusual to have such warm temperatures. And it's very dry.

Some of the areas in the south-west of France are already in a bad situation, watering gardens is limited, and after a cold spell, a lot of fruit trees won't yielsd any crop, or very little. :(

... and some are waging war, destroying cities, looting, raping, and 80% of the zombies are backing that genocide.

And meanwhile, the earth is burning.

"Corny jig", Inspired by the traditional Cossack folk song "Koloda-Duda" :

Nice maple, nice movement and development. The potential of this tree (IMHO) is shorter and wider. Thoughts on a graft to trunk low on right where there is a bend and extension of lowest left branch?? General composition with movement to left.

I have thought about developing a Branch down low at that first curve. Unfortunately, I’d have to grow out at least one or two whips and that isn’t going to happen this season as the tree has been pinched. I’m truly not sure about shortening and widening the tree. I definitely don’t want it getting any taller, but I feel it’s got a nice flow and has a fairly feminine trunk and branching which will continue to get better, hopefully. The tree does move to the left and letting that low left branch lengthen is a good idea. I’ll certainly take your suggestions and study the tree with them in mind.

I dislike the 'transitional' phases of the seasons so much, lol. It was 70 some odd degrees just a few days ago. Yesterday I walked outside to everything covered in snow... It's hard enough to do the shuffling and moving on it's own but even more challenging when I have to do it around a work schedule. That's a beautiful tree @Dav4 and well worth all the extra fuss.

Fwiw, this one could overwinter outside here in 6A Michigan with my other trees and be fine with typical protection. I decided to move it into my cold workshop a bit early because, like you, I’ve got a job and other responsibilities to deal with, and it’s going to get colder and wetter this month. It’s still pretty warm in the workshop… around 50 F… so I won’t be freezing my tookus off while I finish up its fall thinning and wiring. By mid December, temperatures in the workshop will be dipping into the upper 30’s and wiring won’t be quite so fun anymore.
