8822 Cousin It

@sorce Another NAPA 8822 success story. Transfered this yaupon holly from a 5 gallon nursery pot 2 years ago. Cut the root bound ball down by 1/2 from the bottom. Lightly raked out but kept a good deal of original soil for 1st repot. Put it in oversized 2x6 constructed grow box with wire window screen in the bottom.
Filled box with a bag full of sifted NAPA and let it go.
Repotted today and discovered my yaupon had turned into Cousin It (look it up).





Put him on the Gorilla cart and started hosing him down and raking out.

My goal was to take him down another 1/3 and put him in a smaller training pot. Mission accomplished.


Could have gone smaller on the pot but am leary of 115+ summer days coming.

I realise that it is a - bragging rights -situation.

BUT check and see if the loss of thousands of fine feeder
roots / hairs / open wounds, might allow diseases into
the roots.

Might be the explanation for the need for spraying later on.

I think not.

I put some of @milehigh_7 large DE as the bottom substrate. Great stuff.

I've read posts dating back probably a decade on this site trying to get up to speed, and I must say...you two crack me up. Kind of like "Roast Battle". The problem is, there are people on this forum who thinks he has a clue!

I’m not so sure that he doesn’t believe all this nonsense.

As I understand his last post on this thread, he’s saying he would not trip the roots back. Wash them off, but not cut them. I suppose thus means he would then stuff them all back into the pot with fresh soil. Is thus correct, Anthony? No root pruning? Just wash and stuff them all back in?

My first impressions were that he was trolling....I don't know. Maybe he does believe the nonsense. The fact that he can only grow tropical stuff muddies the waters a bit also. And the fact that the guy makes cryptic, quirky statements may make him seem like an eccentric genius to some...lol. I'll stay of of this fray...I just couldn't help but putting in my .02.

What I questioned was washing off the soil, You break many
'of the fine feeder roots. Open wounds on the roots.
Which might allow germs to enter the wounds.
Later ending up with the tree having to be sprayed.

I never said anything about not cutting the roots when repotting.

I had hoped 0soyoung had read up on the above.

what is happening is we read deeper and deeper down here.

we build by oxides and mole mole with resistance to liquids
by properties and tests.

53 Si02 15 Al203 15 Ca0 8 Fe0 ................ is what clay looks like to us

This is why we can have a clay body that is vitreous by 900 deg,C
and not need to fire to 1200 deg.C plus.

So as time goes by we have to talk to specialists in their
fields. Sharing can become more difficult.
But we have found Chinese and Japanese masters to talk
to.
