2015 Bonsai Nut Spring Box Store Challenge Kickoff

People will never learn

At risk of being disqualified, Can we remove non participants from this thread, please? It's distracting to hear Annoying Al and his rants. If he's not in, than he's out. Why is someone who is not particpating in the challenge even allowed to comment on the challenge thread. I am here to learn, have fun and meet some likeminded folks whom I could foster a friendship with. What is the point of Al being here? To bitch at everything?[/Q
How do we know who is or isn't participating unless they say so?

Here we go. Beginner (started last August) with an Azara Microphylla. Purchased from Bark and Garden Center, Olympia, WA on 03/01/2015 for $28.99.

Maybe because he has been a member of this site since before the Earth cooled and has earned the right to comment about the price of chicken salad at the commisary. He is only being negative, if it is your ideas that are being challenged.

I'm sure you would be applauding him if what he said agreed with you. So---- What you are saying is: If you are not a participant you cannot comment? What about the Judge or Judges? Do they need to be participants as well? Think about that one.

We have to be careful and stop thumping people that do not see it the way we do. I am not trying to be negative of your idea about keeping this fun and meeting likeminded folks. Likeminded folks are all over this site and a lot of them probably look at this differently than you do. Most of you found out what I thought early on. I can't participate because of the weather. Today is the first time in three weeks we have not had below zero temperatures at night and above freezing temperatures in the day.

So essentially you have a contest going on that is pretty much for those of you who dwell in the Southern part of America. The nurseries up here are not even open except the green houses. Al;--- he saw something that he thought needed to be commented on, he has the right to do so. What all of you need to do is get your material and make it the best you can and forget what anyone else has to say about the result or the process.

Vance: I guess the point is that you can purchase items up until 30 April,..thus this contest really does not close until 14 May. I think two months is quite generous and I would imagine the by 01 April there will be truckloads of stuff available all the way up to the 44th parallel.

The rules above have been updated to reflect the change in the pot size. Also, a link to the entries thread and email address for final submissions has been added. Thanks everyone! May your trunk be tapered and your branches curvy. :D

Does this challenge exclude styles that would utilize more than one tree? For instance a twin trunk, triple trunk, or a forest? The rules seem to imply use of only one tree, but nowhere does it state specifically that a challenger is limited to one tree.

You can use whatever is in the pot of the material you purchased. What you can't do is purchase two (or more) different trees of the same type and put them in one of the pots. Does that make sense?

Hmmm, a forest. I'll have to include multiple trunks in one pot in my search for material :)

Al is a very good person and a valued participant here. He offers straight up advice without sugar coating it. Seems you are a little thin skinned and do not understand that... Also, he has some of the most informative posts here along with some that are just knock your socks off funny - Chillax a bit...

I just might get to participate after all....I finished up a large part of the extra jobs I have taken on and now just have to find something to spend the money on....Anybody got a nice 70-72 Corvette for sale....?

Is it OK to post pics of material for approval even if we have not purchased it yet.....? I don't want to spend $50 and then not be able to use it. I'm guessing the approval is for species not the actual material....?

Absolutely, but as long as you know the species that's really all we need. The photos you can't post are of the finished work.

I'm glad there is a contest I can "afford" to look forward to. Just wish this ice would move along so I can get out to look at some material. My gerbil is running at a possibility that I am hoping no one else thinks of. :D

We just had an ice storm this AM, not a bad one but ice none-the-less.
