I know, right? I would have been at the show on Sunday, but sadly I was at a memorial service for a friend :(

I just got a spike in response time for the site... and it was while the site was waiting for gstatic.com (Google Javascript code/static image/CSS server) and play.google.com services (even though we don't have any play.google content on the site). These are cross-platform services that...

You should never feel uncomfortable to share your work. Since I was talking with @Wood about it, let me just say that I felt it was too "literal". I prefer bonsai that suggest things... instead of having miniature animals, etc, that hammer the idea home. I don't need those elements to...

Advice on Repotting for a newbie

^^^ This is a very important point, particularly because your tree is pretty root-bound. Normally in the SE US I would wait until June to repot a tropical. Unlike most other trees, tropicals do best when repotted in warm weather - as long as they have plenty of warm season left to recover in...

    Literati/ Bunjin American Beech

Always remember - when designing, styling or evaluating a tree, start with the roots, and then the trunk. The branches do not define a tree - even though they draw the eye, they are the easiest things to change. We don't know what the roots look like, and the trunk is quite straight from the...

    BRT, sun or shade?

The more sun, the better. In the fall/early winter interior leaves will yellow and drop... even when I kept it outside in the same location all year.

Depending where you live, you may also experience issues with Google ad serving. As I have mentioned before, Google seems to have thrown their business model out the window and gone all-in on video ads and pop-ups, which we will never have on this site. Because they are steering advertisers...

This is an excellent example of how, without doing anything crazy, a nice tree will naturally mellow and age with time.

    Seed Stratification and Germination Tips

I've never heard anything about cinnamon being anti-fungal :) But one thing that IS anti-fungal is sphagnum moss. After I soak my seeds in the H2O2 solution overnight, I put them in a bag with slightly damp (not wet) sphagnum moss - ie moss that has been soaked in water and then squeezed as...

    Arctic blast... already?

I can't really complain because we had a mild November... until the last week. We are now running seven days straight of temps that are 10 degrees or more below average for this time of year.

    Help with juniper identification...

Yes... it is a Chinese juniper. Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' (originally). Many were planted throughout Southern California landscape - so many, in fact, that people started calling them "Hollywood junipers" because they were quite common throughout Hollywood. Now many east coast nurseries...

    Help with juniper identification...

Agree with this comment. Yes they get juvenile foliage, but they are very quick to lose it. You really have to cut them back hard to get them to throw needle foliage. FWIW the original name for the Hollywood juniper is "Kaizuka". There are quite a few nurseries that still sell it by this name.

Garage To Bonsai Workshop Transformation! Need Your Wisdom!

I have a large walk-out basement area with double doors that lead directly to my bonsai shelves. I like having access to the heat in the winter, or the A/C in the summer. Some of the features: Plenty of shelving for pots / tools / chemicals. Three garbage cans on wheels that are full of soil...

Juniper Bonsai - stressed or dying?

Junipers take a while to recover from being repotted. They may pout for six months or a year before their growth takes off. However I don't see anything concerning with your tree. Don't forget - junipers will often change color in winter, going from a deep vibrant green to a greyish flat...

    Purchasing Trees Online

I would actually suggest the exact opposite. They grow for online retail customers only - and their stock is relatively expensive. I know two retail Japanese maple nurseries within an hour or two of Mr. Maple and they offer trees as good, if not better, at lower (in some cases much lower)...

    Purchasing Trees Online

Just make sure you buy special cultivars, or something that isn't broadly available. Don't waste the money buying a bloodgood, crimson queen, etc, that you could probably find at your local Lowes/Home Depot.

    Purchasing Trees Online

In a nutshell, the nursery trade sells trees based on pot size, because the practice is usually correlated with age of stock, and cost invested. In other words, 1 gallon pots until three years, 3 gallon pots until five years, or whatever. It is only the roughest of rough guidelines. You can...

Selling year-old Baldcypress seedling in hand-made ceramic

Folks... we're talking about a bald cypress seedling here. I think the OP was pretty open about saying it was a seedling in a handmade pot. If you are interested, make an offer. If not, perhaps provide some constructive criticism and move on. I'm not sure why people are getting so worked up...

How to take care of my potted Acer palmatum trees.

Japanese maples go into and come out of winter dormancy slowly. Once they are fully dormant, just set them on the ground and mulch around the pots. Make sure they remain moist (but not soaking wet). If you are about to have a cold winter storm it helps to water them prior to the cold front...
