The 2022 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Collected this beast of a hawthorn. I was weary because the last time l was in that spot l got the worst case of poison oak l ever had.
I think i will be a nice multi trunk. I will let it respond and reduce further in a year or two.

So, if you're feeling daring sometime, poison oak and the like don't live around my area - too arid - but I want one just to mess with anyone who might mess with my trees.😜

I just collected three this year.

Grabbed an unknown crab apple from the woods today:

Potting it up is the most recent post here if you want to see the hack job to the roots:

I collected a few in late February. These pictures were taken several weeks ago, but so far I am seeing buds develop on all but the large hornbeam. The small hornbeam is covered in new leaves.

Took a long, sweaty hike with my dog.
Wore her out.

Stupid trees photo bombing my dog pics all the time! 😡
Anyway, I THOUGHT I'd finally found that nice Gamble's oak clump I'd been hoping for, but then it turned into an infomercial when I started digging.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

Had to saw it out, which I generally dislike doing.

Well, we'll see what I can do with it.

Coooooooooooooooooool!

Ok.. last one.. I think.

It is a Malus or prunus... I honestly just couldn't pass it by.

The buds, bark, and branches look like this.81AD8ACD-E136-47C4-B788-61994FDF25B7.jpeg0B010B83-E1D0-4360-85B9-7D7C9FD5260E.jpeg

My current "front" ...actually... I'm not sure anymore... we'll just see what the season brings.

I've spent a fair amount of time looking for local yamadori and I seem to be having an issue identifying trees before they are in leaf. So many trees looks so similar, even when some leaves start to open. By the time I figure out what it is, it's probably too late to take them. So what do you guys do? Do you mark them when they are still identifiable and collect later or do I just need to brush up on my identification skills?

You can hunt them in season and remember where they are.

There are a couple distinguishing characteristics that you just learn.. about certain trees AS you gain experience WITH THOSE trees.

How much of that branch are we considering keeping?
That decision I think controls your direction.
That trunk is NICE, though.

Yes.

Haha.. much less than is there now..

Patience, friend..

I'm ok with letting it go wild and crazy, not HAVING to push new buds, and recover for a season.

🤓

Yes, assuming you have regular access the spot I mark in the fall and collect in the spring. Or, sometimes I mark and CUT BACK HARD in early summer to stimulate budding back, then collect the following spring.
