Thought I would post this so everyone would find it. It seems their picture algorithm does not like pictures that are much taller than wide. What I’ve done to stop it is I will take the picture a little farther back so there is wasted space above and below what is important for the picture. Then, before you post it, crop the unnecessary bottom and top out to make the photo more square. Every time I’ve done that, the picture posts correctly.

Hope it works for you.

Testing - using the "Insert Image" button. Both photos 2400 on the long side. Photos taken at New England Bonsai Gardens, not at home. :D

One portrait, one landscape.

Wonder if it’s an Apple vs Android thing. I use Apple and have the problem.

BNut said it's forum software related.

It is software related. The "attach files" button strips out the rotational data in the image file. It is going to be fixed in the next software patch.

(More technical description: When you take a picture, rotational data is stored as a metadata tag called EXIF orientation. Your phone or camera has a sensor that records the orientation at the moment you snap the pic, and common image viewers and software read this data to understand the proper image orientation. In the case of the site software, for whatever reason if you use the "attach files" button to upload an image, the EXIF metadata tag is being dropped and the image will often been displayed in the wrong orientation. Using the "insert image" button, or dragging and dropping an image into your post from your desktop, will maintain the EXIF metadata tag and the image will be oriented correctly).

I assume since my work around is working, without the metadata tag it is picking the most efficient orientation to save space. When I crop the pictures, it becomes wider than tall and it likes that orientation.

Editing a picture typically causes the software to "rewrite" the image file. It then typically reorders the information and removes the need for rotation.

Whatever works for you.

This is NOT a maths class where you have to use the "right method" :)
