I want to more arguments ..Bonsai Humor Thread No. 2

Depends on the OG you’re talking about. Having ten plus years on the forum does not equal a clear understanding and quality application of the elements that make a good tree. I’ve seen many that have progressed massively over a ten year period, those who have not, and those who I have no idea if they have progressed, because they never post their own trees.

If you notice, I mostly comment on horticulture. I'm pretty good at growing things. I rarely comment on design, as I don't have much to show for my work. Every 5 to 10 years I have an unplanned, "unfortunate incident" that tends to set me back to square one. As a result, my trees are not much to look at. My last heart attack and 10 day hospitalization April 2025 set me back again. I had not made contingency plans for tree care. I knew better, just didn't get too it. My last "back up plan" from a few years earlier had proven unreliable, and I had not trained a new helper.

This azalea that I picked up last year (2024) from Rick Garcia, has survived, so I have one tree, to keep working on. Actually I have about 25 or so trees of various species that are rooted into a growing bed. They had been healed in for winter and never got dug up. For some, it will be good trunk growth, others, it won't be helpful. Got a lot to work on.

I hope you're well now and that you have your illness under control.

Your OG status is unparalleled and not up for debate! Take care of yourself, Leo… You are a source of knowledge and experience that can’t be replaced!

I dare anybody to argue that!

This is the video that actually got me interested in this art form . I imagine many of you may have seen it but the guy is simply turning a cheap store bought Juniper into the beginings of a "Bonsai" tree. His video is in layman's terms and strips this procedure down to the most basic steps.

To anybody who takes the time to view it, I'd be interested in knowing what right about and what may be wrong about it?

I took the time to watch it. And I looked at the author's Youtube channel. The video was "just barely okay" as a repotting tutorial, no real huge problems, but not broadcast quality either. The way he added the sphagnum was "wrong" in that he should have shredded it and worked it into the media before adding the media to the pot. . I also would have potted the tree slightly lower in the pot. The haphazard method of styling was amateurish, but the material was really too young to be styled, basically the guy created a "mallsai".

However it was the authors first video. There were several dozen subsequent videos, and judging by the titles, and views, this kid got a lot better as he made more videos over the course of several years. I queued up a couple to watch later. He does have a pleasant enough camera presence.

Life gets tough at times, I'm sorry for your losses and troubles. I hope you will get back and enjoy working on your trees. ✊

I think @Dav4 said it perfectly. You are an institution on BNut LEO. Never a doubt your place in the community.

Thanks for the encouragement one and all. Really I'm doing better. And I am planning on adopting a new apprentice, soon. Lost a lot of weight, and have been exercising more. So far, doctors are optimistic that if I keep the weight off, I will avoid future reoccurrences.

I commented because @Hartinez is spot on. He is correct, there are plenty of people, I won't name, who comment constantly on design, often loudly, without showing any of their work. I think this is what drove Adair and a few other of the old timers to just bow out of BNut. There is one who when sufficiently badgered did show some of his work, and actually it was not that bad, so I stopped critiquing him for not showing his work. But there are plenty of others. I am guilty myself, often because I don't have good examples to show. But I do post photos when I can. So I offer help where I can, especially horticulture, and leave artistic help to those who I recognize as having much more serious artistic chops, like @Hartinez or @Dav4 or many of the other long timer and better artists here.

And we're glad you're getting healthy again! I always love talking to you about horticulture when you come to AAC get togethers. There aren't many people that know more about fertilizer than I do and of course you're one of them.

Damn unc . Rest up we still need OG’s around to slap us around. I can’t even list all the insults my teachers tells me and the other apprentices every day were there

Newbies should be more vocal. Stop asking so many questions and just offer advice. We already know what we're doing, so it's time to start telling the old-timers everything they're doing wrong.
Newbies need to stop posting sticks in nursery cans and calling it bonsai .. more like bone-sigh 😭

Does that person start with a P ?

Since some of the OG /old geezers? have chimed in they don't like when someone does not follow advice, I thought I would voice my concern over it - advice is just that, advice. It is not meant to be adhered to every time you get it, or you may end up sorry. If you have never made some bad life choices on someone elses advice then you're probably safe. Weigh all and then make your OWN choices.
Too much worrying about conflicting advice here too. It's supposed to be that way, different opinions. Not everything has a gold standard.
