I want to hear more arguments ..Bonsai Humor Thread No. 2

Then you should have seen it 20 years ago! I personally made it MUCH livelier by commenting on everything, whether I knew anything about the subject or not.

I was like that then too. A comment on every thread. It was exhausting to keep up with. Luckily I had a boring job. Now retired, I don't have the time I used to have for forums. Too much to do

Says the guy who joined 5 years ago 😂. It was absolutely better 10 years ago for reasons like leatherback said. Better trees, more technical discussions, just all around better information being shared.
You would think that given that og's have had 10 more years to work on trees the trees should be a lot better now then then.

Depends on the OG you’re talking about. Having ten plus years on the forum does not equal a clear understanding and quality application of the elements that make a good tree. I’ve seen many that have progressed massively over a ten year period, those who have not, and those who I have no idea if they have progressed, because they never post their own trees.

Not always the case.

Brian Van Fleet has posted a comment that he got from Peter Warren that often rings true.... "There are people who practice bonsai for 30 years, and some who practice bonsai for 1 year, 30 times over"

I feel like there is a lot to learn in those statements. I should take note of the second (30 times); I'm sometimes to scared to start and buy trees because im already afraid to loose them, for me the 4weeks travel in may (end of spring) in combination with watering is hard. The mother in law is sweet but I would not trust her to that level.

I think he met the challenge: "Try and argue that!" 😅
He may not have a good argument, but he definitely tried.

I think the people that post pictures of their silly trees in pots, year after year, are most likely introverted losers who don’t have anything else going for them in life . I mean, some of them have been doing it for over 15 years here… like, get a life, losers!

So, if I don't post a lot of pictures of my pathetic sticks in pots, does that make me an extroverted loser? How long do I have to be here before I can achieve such high regard?

Can't we still see those discussions? So we have now what you have 10 years ago, PLUS 10 years worth of progressions!

Therefore... better now! 😁

I would like to confirm that you are right in my case. I'm introverted loser. Not yet on 15 years mark maybe, but close.
Since I'm introverted, and loser, I wouldn't normally respond to you here. Just read it and laugh. But, I gather rest of my extrovert friday fuel and reply anyway.

The biggest difference I see from then to now, is the lack of willingness to post some dam trees. Clubs, books, videos, classes, here on BNUT, whatever you choose to learn from. Take the advice and post some trees. Good or bad. You don’t get better by not doing the work. Do the work. Post a bad tree if you have to. Be open to criticism.

As much as smoke used to drive me crazy with some of his ways, he always called out people on here for not posting trees. Anytime someone would be critical of his work, he’d always say, awesome, send me to a post where you did the work on a tree your criticizing me for. Maybe not the best argument, but I’ll be dammed if I don’t see that all the time now. Lots of talk and little to show.

POST YOUR TREES.

Just do it.
I get the most insane criticism from people that have only posted pencil thick starters with no movement.

sorry guys I don't have time to post trees on the forum I'm too busy being a popular tree nerd in real life and not on the internet.

There were a few very voal members, and we had more long-term growers active on the forum. In general, there was a much higher level of technical expertise in discussions, and discussions were at a much higher level when it comes to technical abilities. Just check a few threads where @Adair M and @Vance go head to head. Or discussions between @MACH5 and @Brian Van Fleet . We seem to have lost a part of that input.

Well, that does come into play, but I still feel there was more depth to the discussions initially.

Browse through the teashouse subforum. There is a reason that subforum is no longer in the alerts system as it got so heated there at times.
Yeah, a similar thing happened with that site I mentioned. The old cranks post less, influx of new people who didn't grow up arguing on forums, and more people were interested in how they were representing their personal brand. The site matured, became less abrasive and more safe for work. Better or worse? Mostly, just different.

The other thing is the gradual enshittification of everything on the internet. So many people expect an Instagram-like experience where the currency for interaction is likes and emoticons. I think this has hampered communication everywhere. Still, places like this are relatively lively compared to the platforms that people spend most of their time on these days.

I feel like I agreed with you too much here, so back on theme:
