Does anyone with experience with Yaupon Holly know the best time of year to do a trunk chop? I live in the Northeast USA. Mine still hasn't flowered but is starting to push the tiniest bit of new growth. Thanks.

I have chopped Yaupon holly multiple times between early spring all the way to early summer without issue. I am in 9a zone so there are some differences, but I think you are still in the good time window.

And you are in La. Posted is in Rhode Island.

Yaupon holly isn't very common here in Zone 7. RI is zone 7-5B depending on location. I would be very cautious about trunk chopping much past May, given the recovery time and earlier onset of fall.

I am banking that the tree only has a "tiniest push of growth" that we are still in chopping season. I thought the best time to chop is when the tree just start to bud and push some growth.

I would do it after the last frost - whatever that is in your area.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I’ll think I’ll chop it tomorrow. I generally move it to an unheated attic with light for winter protection, but hopefully it should have plenty of new growth by then
