As it is just about “hardwood cutting time” in my neck of the woods.... I was “kicking around” the idea of a group of people, taking a certain number of fruiting tree cuttings, and observing them over the course of a handful of years.. (Contest style)

This idea will be refined, structured and organized more formally IF there is interest...

So just lemme know.. *finger guns*

(I will be doing it anyways.. sooo)

One definite prerequisite would be that the cuttings would have to be deciduous species...

I’m taking cuttings from a black ice plum, and a (Currently) unknown crab growing in my parents yard... I’m also taking a lot of apple cuttings that we’ve found in the woods.

Is the strike rate quite good for hardwood cuttings of fruit trees? I need some education on this.

is this with a view to creating bonsai or just for horticulture purposes?
it seems that some are doing bonsai while many are just doing horticulture😁🤔

the horticulture and lack of bonsai seems to be becoming more prevalent.😏

I’ve struck apple and plum hardwoods with 40ish percent.. but THEN didn’t have the light to keep them alive... I am more prepared this year.

Attractive, fruiting trees, grown and trained with “bonsai technique” in attempt to create a miniaturized version of a larger, older, interesting fruit tree..with artistic lee-way...

I guess is the goal...

oh i see. its just that in the opening post i didnt see the words progression or bonsai being used. just that the plan was to 'observe' cuttings development over a number of years hehe
maybe you need to set a time frame then, how long before these cuttings will be developed into bonsai.... ' miniaturized version of a larger, older'

5-10 years maybe?

Still.
The challenge focusses on taking cuttings. As I am a little beyond that stage I have better tings to do.

Yes! Most definitely closer to that ten year mark.

I kind of left the conversation open and vague.. sorry about that.

dont get me wrong, if the chap wants to observe cuttings for a few years its all cool, buts as its a bonsai forum im expecting to see the cuttings developed for or into bonsai. i dont wish to view ones horticultural prowess at growing cuttings with no desire to carry them on to the bonsai stage.

Understandable.

I am still creating my collections and projects “portfolio”.. I still have more space and time that I can comfortably give.

I’ve just been at this a little over a year... I’m still “burning off that energy”

Most definitely the “end game” idea is “bonsai” in aesthetic attempt and presentation.

I see this effort having more success as a data collection project towards assembling a resource/guide on "how to turn hardwood cuttings of X genus into bonsai in 10 years" type of thing. I don't think there is much appetite for it as a contest.

BUT I'd definitely be interested in a "Turn seedlings or cuttings into a forest planting in X years contest"

That makes perfect sense, and I agree.
