Seasons? Not remotely. Our weather is very mild, with the exception of seasonal winds. Are the cycles as severe in Cali as they are in the North?
Oh. Being a southern tree, I think it does quite well here since we have mild winters, as long as I keep it watered.I was thinking of the tree life cycles...
I post this pic all the time when people ask if BC can take climates out of the southern U.S. the BC in the middle of the photo was originally collected in the Achafalaya swamp in Louisiana. That was 30 years ago. I’ve overwintered outside under mulch for all those winters. Snow cold (not arctic cold) are part of its life. It is very hardy if allowed to acclimate with fall frosts and shallow freezesOh. Being a southern tree, I think it does quite well here since we have mild winters, as long as I keep it watered.

It's a La Nina year, so our winter has been really mild and dry. We've already had temps in the 80s (currently 50s - 60s), so many of my trees woke up a month earlier than they did last year.Excellent!! Mine are just beginning to thaw out...![]()
I would bend down the flat top primary branches a bit more. I would not prune or train the secondary branches until they lignify. Then I would wire them to fit in the flat top form. Next year they will be chopped for continuation if the ramification. Here's my flat top BC, growing very well.
My calendar says I should prune in June. I'd like to get rid of the shoots coming out of the trunk and top that aren't wired, and focus on the beginnings of ramification on my chosen branches.
What would you do now to continue with the flat top styling?
