Wire Caddy: Do they work well?

I keep toying with the idea of getting a wire caddy to keep my wire more organized. I love the idea, but I'm curious why I don't see more people using them. Are these worth their (high, IMO) price?
Currently I have my wire in 1kg rolls sitting on my bench.

It’s one of those things you get and never really use. I also fumble around ina bin or where ever to find the right wire.

I keep my aluminum wire on a wire caddy because I'm often bringing trees to other friends houses to work on them during our study group/gang meetings and it keeps my supplies from taking up too much room. Copper wire is brought along in a crate along with my 2 kilo roll of 2mm wire.

I look at it like this: When I'm going to open up a joystick to replace some parts, I don't need my jackhammer and power washer.
When I wire, I get the wire I need from the bucket and I get wiring. I can hold my coils and my tools in one hand, the plant in the other. With a caddy, it would either have to be the full work station on wheels, or I'd go with hands.

I have a peg board that holds 2 rolls of wire at each size. My tools are in a tool roll that is hanging on 2 nails -open-.
When I do demo's I just grab the rolls I want to use, put them in a crate with my toolroll and am ready to go.

I prefer to have it in hand. To guesstimate length needed by eyeballing and unrolling it along the branch needing wired. So a caddy would not work for my method of madness.

Adair actually talked me out of one...when I pondered the gadget.

I spent a good amount of time making one out of wood. Hanger bolts with wood insert nuts so each level was removable, burned it, sanded it, stained it, urethaned it and it looks and functions beautifully. However, now it just sits there with a little bit of 8mm on the bottom of it. I just end up grabbing what I need for the particular task at hand.

I don't have one currently but all my experience with them in the past is that the are a pain in the posterior. Most of them only hold up to 6 sizes and that is only about half the available wire sizes. I mounted some peg board on the side of a rolling cart I built for my tools to keep my wire organized and handy. Every size available at my finger tips.

I bought Julian Adams' last wire safe. I find it incredibly useful to keep the wire organized when I have to travel with copper wire. For aluminum I've been tempted by some of the wire caddies I've seen lately, but none will hold all the sizes I'd want, so I expect I'll just keep making the milk crate work. All told though, a good work area/layout completely negates the need for a wire caddy at home.
