Winter Silhouette Bonsai Show, Dec 4-5, 2021

That's actually exactly what I was planning to do. I'm going to be wearing a blue bonsai t-shirt, and I'll write my name on blue painter's tape, plus I'll put the web site on a second piece of tape.
Then that's what we should all do, lol! Everyone with blue painters tape with their name we will know they are members of BNut.

I can’t wait to see Joe’s professional photo!

Great tree Adair! Congrats!! Sure to win a prize for sure. I believe this was Steve's tree? Where did the original material come from? It looks like an old Japanese import?

Yes, this was Steve’s tree. He asked me to buy it at the National show. He said he wanted to be able to travel and not be tied to the maintenance. It is over 100 years old, started from seed. It was in Kokofu-ten in 1954! It was sold at auction in Japan in 1968 and imported into the US in 1968. Steve bought it from Sam Beach who imported it 40 years ago and never showed it until it went to the Nationals a couple months ago.

One thing I noticed…

Look how much difference the background makes! It looks so much denser against the black than it does against the white!

Didn't know it has such a long and decorated history! I did see a video of one of Bjorn's blogs where he works on this tree with Steve. Thoroughly enjoyed it at the Nationals. I think I would have rather stayed home taking care of this tree! 😂

Enjoy the show!

This tree is so amazing, in person it's even better than the photo will be! I too think the background is better here, as well as the tatami under the stand instead of the blue. Congratulations Adair.

Are you coming back today? I'll be there in a couple hours.
I won't be able to make it back today. Not because I don't want to, but because my wife and I are in the process of planning for our new house and have work to do :)

It was a full day yesterday - I didn't get home until almost 10PM.

Great show! Met a lot of folks that I have known on this site only by their user names! I'll share some of my photos later after my coffee :)
I was in the look out for you. You must have arrived after I left a little after 3pm. Met several members as well.

I had a great time at the show. I was there yesterday from 10 am until almost 2 pm. The exhibits were all amazing (a couple pics attached), and I came home with a Seiju Elm (3rd photo). There were lots of other trees I thought about buying, but ended up with just the one. Also got a nice pot (4th photo) from Bob Pruski at Port City Bonsai and Ceramics. Turns out that Bob and his wife live only about 45 minutes south of me. They also told me about the Cape Fear Bonsai Club, who meets once a month at the New Hanover County Arboretum in Wilmington. The club skips January, but I'll be going to their February and March meetings for sure. It'll be nice to socialize with some other bonsai lovers in my area, and bring in some of my trees to get advice and share ideas.

Also got to chat with Hank Gross from Skylands Bonsai, who also happens to live within an hour of me. We talked about Japanese Black Pines and he invited me to come over sometime in the future to peruse his collection of JBPs in development since he only had a small fraction of his stock at the show. Every one I met at the show, vendor or otherwise, was super friendly and wonderful to talk with.

I didn't have a name tag on or anything, but if you happened to see a guy with a big cross tattoo on his forearm, wearing jeans and a navy blue t-shirt with a German Shepherd graphic on the back, that was me. I'll definitely be attending this show every year going forward.

@SouthernMaple is your club suppose to be there or did I read it wrong on the site?
We were there, I would say our entire board was there except 3 members for the first part of day one, and about 5 or 6 of our club regulars were there too for both days. I was the guy in the detroit tigers hat and the hawaiian shirt, kind of disappointed with the lack of good trees for sale, but Mark Comstock was sick and didn't make the trip down as well as a few other vendors.

But I got to meet and hang out with Joe Noga which made the trip for me and meet and talk to Rodney Clemons, Mark Arpag and the OG Bonsai Nut. Seeing Adair finally win best deciduous was a treat as well as having Arthur Joura honored with an award was pretty cool too.

Sorry we missed each other, I left my phone charger in Asheville so it was on battery saver mode for the weekend and was only used to save contact information. There is talk of doing another show there or in Greensboro in April with all the Carolina clubs chipping in trees and funds but its going to be hard to convince the board of anything if Omicron becomes a thing this year.

hopefully the new owners of the venue will let us continue to have shows there

I'm glad to hear this said by someone who (I think) has been to the show before. I didn't know what to expect, with this being my first time attending, but I went out there with a budget of $1,000 and wanted to come home with two or three nice pieces of material. Instead, I spent only about $400 and feel like I want to go right back to cruising the web looking for trees. It's not that the show overall was disappointing. I did enjoy myself. I guess it's just that while there was some nice stuff available for sale (in my novice opinion anyway), there wasn't a very wide selection of material in the $250-500 price range. Overall, I felt like 90% of it was either sub-$100 seedlings, or fully-developed trees costing $750 to $1,000 or even way more.

Again, I have nothing to compare it to, but it'll be interesting to see how it goes next year and what will be offered for sale then.

All the good stuff was already sold by the time I got there right before lunch on Saturday. I ended up buying some show books from Valavanis' table. Years past, there were more vendors who brought a wider variety of material and supplies. The quality of the show has risen, but there were also several fewer displays.

Still, the best show I've been to in the past 2 years.

I was there from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday. I brought my dad, which was a really great way to introduce him to bonsai. Hate I didn’t get to meet some of you, especially @Bonsai Nut. It was great to see @JoeR there. Also was able to meet @Pitoon, great chatting with you for a while my friend. It was my first show and I enjoyed it immensely. Got to meet @Adair M next to his champion tree as well. Really looking forward to next year. I purchased a nice little Hinoki from @William N. Valavanis. Here are some photos I took, in no particular order.

Well this was my first time going and to be honest I was expecting it to be more, but o had fun and there were some nice trees there. I did get to meet @Pitoon though, nice guy and i was glad to met you. I just missed @Adair M but maybe next time. However I did pick up some pots, akadama some biogold. My favorite part was meeting Dean Bulluck and getting a sweet pot from him, we have been talking for a while and I couldn’t wait to get one. I really wanted to meet @Waldo Street Pottery but you were busy so I didn’t want to interrupt, by the way I hope your ok looked like a bad injury. I also got a Sonny Boggs pot, which immediately got stolen by my wife when I got home and a nice Bob Pruski pot. 812ED329-01FE-4663-A3DC-E22411518109.jpegE77009E5-D123-448E-9A3D-7AD848B9AEBD.jpeg84F2C476-329B-43F5-A824-4CE0E873871A.jpeg0F743CA1-B056-47D7-BE9A-2C3230F149E7.jpegA23EA801-0A84-4A99-ACF7-41E6953D6928.jpegA23EA801-0A84-4A99-ACF7-41E6953D6928.jpegThe one from Dean is the yellowish, the small one is Sonny and the other is Bob Pruski

last winter silhouette show (2019) had much better trees, I personally felt the three vendors at Knoxville this year had better trees, I bought a few cheap stands, some wire and was going to buy a pot or two but I decided to hold off and support my local buddy Rob Wallace instead. I can get 2 pots for every one pot these guys were charging and I can use my rewards credit card and get 3.5% back
