winter re-pot ficus

Need to wire and clip some of those branches and make a nice sort of domed top shape with the canopy. And maybe let those aerial roots take hold. Slightly concerned about a reverse taper situation with all those branches growing from the top...

Remember that Ficus salicaria needs stronger light than some other species in the genus. Your tree, but I'd give supplemental light.

Definitely good design potential.
Good point.. i've had this tree for about 3 seasons and it definitely does not like being inside during winter, but has thus far survived and bounced back well once outside... That being said, I'm starting to like it now and may be time to give it some light.. I hate to run a light all day for one measly tree though!

Nice tree! Are you getting swelling from the flush of growth at the top? It already looks like it's thicker on the left side of the bend than the right. Could just be the photo angle, though.

On the reverse taper, I feel like you are close to running into so big issues. IMO trim the lower right portion that causes the issue and start a runner to use for a second level to the canopy next year

You need some branching that can start from a different point

Wow! Love it! I actually have one that is very similar but just more younger and smaller. I too have been wondering about the reverse tapper. Mine already has some and what's gonna stop it from getting worse??? Nothing! expect me. Cool but how? Threat graft? Turn into a root over rock? Let aerial roots go crazy and cover it's you can't see it? But yeah man cool tree and cool to see something so similar to mine just more mature.

On young material you can often correct the issue by removing the offending branches and then growing the entire tree thicker to smoothen it out.

You can also try to carve it and let it heal.

it right now actually only has three branches coming off it. I bought it 6 months ago and right before it was cut back hard to just three 1 to 3 inch beaches and now has grown out but I've removed everything off it that wasn't coming from one of those beaches. So if I understand you correctly that's kind of already happened. I do like the idea of Carving it out some. It's something I've thought of but wasn't sure if it was practical or not. I was thinking about carving it out so it would look like the development of the different three branches spitting apart from the main trunk sooner. Just take my time doing it by small sections.

I also read about people cutting lines running along the trunk of the tapper issue area. Anybody have any experience with that working?

Wouldn't that cause a callous and the area to thicken more? I've actually heard similar things to do in areas *without* the taper to thicken them to be in better proportion with the swollen area.
