Why the recent rash of sideways pictures?

I'm not having this issue on PC. This probably is not so easy if you are using your phone.

I click the "Insert Image" button. It then shows a dotted box. I drag my photo into the box and there it is with no issues.

From @Bonsai Nut :
"Using the "insert image" button, or dragging and dropping an image into your post from your desktop, will maintain the EXIF metadata tag and the image will be oriented correctly)."
Hmmmm...

Edit to add: This is a 2221 x 3889 photo. The forum software automatically crops it to (in this case at least) 1200 tall.

I don't think people are doing it on purpose, but once you see they're sideways you can remove them, crop and try again. I'm told pics that are much taller than wide often get posted sideways. If you leave them sideways many will just ignore them.
Im one of those culprits. But belieive me I tried to figure it out. Bit of a "nincompute". I have learned some tactics here to try. But from my understanding its best to fill the frame and trees in general tend to be vertical. I could have croped out the pot and that would've worked?
