My biggest fear around firearms is "Overpenetration". All these high caliper weapons, if you ever fire a shot, not on the firing range, the bullet can go through your target, the siding of the house across the street, the neighbor in the house and finally come to a stop in the engine block of a car a quarter mile away. For this reason a shotgun is better for home defense, use goose shot. It won't go through 2 layers of drywall, but will make a hell of a mess of the "problem" in front of you. I carry a 380, small enough to fit in my pocket, will certainly make the "problem" in front of me go "oof", but won't kill the innocent person behind the "problem" in front of me. And in close quarters, a 380 doesn't need a lot of room for you to maneuver to aim. Not too accurate for long distance, but then if there is long distance, is there really a need to shoot?
A former friend of mine, a bit of a drunk, was drinking one evening, playing with a cheap, 25 caliper pistol, a "saturday night special". He shot himself in the knee, the bullet went through his knee, through his front door, and through the aluminium siding of the mobile home parked next door. Then he has the "nerve" to call me for a ride to the emergency room, as he didn't want the police at his trailer. Hallmark does not make a card for "Congratulations on your Self Inflicted Gunshot Wound". This was the third time this clown accidentally shot himself. The first two injuries were with air powered pellet guns. Some people shouldn't own guns. Oh, and fortunately the neighbor wasn't home at the time. Needless to say, that was one friendship that did NOT last the test of time.
Point being, a "little" 25 caliper went through a human, a door and through aluminum siding, imagine how far through the trailer park a 9mm or 10 mm slug would have traveled? Luckily only the clown owning the gun was injured in this incident. I don't think enough people think about where the bullet will stop afterwards, if it misses your target, or if it goes through your target.
