What is the threshold number?

I think the threshold should be determined by the capacity to “sink a ship.”

Person 1: “I heard Cajun has an enough bald cypress trees to sink a ship.”

Person 2: (gasp) “That is entirely too many trees.”
Boudreaux: Hey Tib, I heard Cjr has too many cypress trees. I ting he has enough cypress to build a shrimp boat.
Thibodeaux: Mais non. Wid all dem little tings, He be lucky to have enough lumber to build a pirogue!

For me, the threshold is when I begin to bend my own rules.

"Only two dedicated-bonsai tables," I say.

"How big of a table?" My wife beats me to the punch.

So, this is the rule. Two tables that have a surface area of no greater than 'normal.'

But this is enough to keep me busy. Any task which requires maintenance for most, if not all, of the trees can take half the day at a leisurely pace.

It's not so much to take on so as to stop looking at it as an enjoyment, a daily meditation and hobby -- but taking on any more would certainly, for me, seem more like a chore anyway.

So, any more than two tables for this guy. And, to bend the rules properly . . . I chose a picnic table as a second table. "So I can sit down! Okay?" But I won't be one to complain if a tree or three borrows my seat...😜

In the house! Wow, I never thought of that, lots of opportunity there. Lets see that could mean more equipment, tools, lighting misting.
Lots of fun. What about the garage, we could park the vehicles in the driveway! Perhaps the guideline should be wether the trees have enough space for proper care. Why focus on quantity? Seems like a rather narrow point of view!

It depends on what the limiting factor is for your bonsai practice. It could be however many you can carry back and forth between your winter storage area and the benches. It could be however many you have the free time to water, prune, wire, repot, decandle, defoliate, fertilize, etc. It could be however many you have yard space for. It could be one less than the number that would cause your spouse to stage an intervention.
