What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Today not bonsai related: cooked a big lunch of pinto beans with a hambone, liver and onions, carmelized carrots, buttered peas and a big pan of cornbread. Then after cleaning my kitchen, I repotted two rubber tree plants into one pot, combined 5 small parlor palms into one big pot.

Bonsai related: potted up two Benjamin Ficus into short quart pots to grow more roots, and spread roots on two Trident maples and put each in a training pot with a flat under the roots.

Since I haven’t taken photos today here is a picture of the oldest book in my bonsai library…a 1957 edition:

I’m playing bridge tonight with my siblings…two in California and my sister in Oklahoma. We use Zoom for the meeting and play the game on the Trickster app. Great way to stay connected.
Wow you keep busy

Well I have something to share today. One of my buddies taking care of my trees sent me some pictures of my cuttings and air layers. Cuttings are doing great and growing. Probably going to have a mess of roots to untangle when I get back, but they all look good. My red maple saplings all look good. They are one of my first projects for pre-spring. Going to make two forest settings with them. One small, 10-15 trees and one large with maybe 20-25 trees. It depends on how many I can use that are fairly close in size. Some are still quite small, so they will wait another season or I may use them for individual settings. My large Katsura Japanese Maple that I did 3 air layers on I’m not sure how it’s doing. From the picture, it looks like the top air layer may have stayed too wet and it’s not doing well. Lower leaves all still look good, so maybe they are rooting well. Will find out when I get home. Hoping to make the trip south next week. Can’t wait to get back home.

The Atlas Cedars and JBPs look to be growing and doing well. 5960925225161202186.jpeg3939044995723876228.jpeg6611820212900634038.jpeg7346554084483573381.jpeg6756081409449280622.jpeg

Brought all the tropicals into the garage earlier this week to avoid the frost warnings. Today I trimmed them all up, checked for bugs, set up the lighting shelves, and the grow tent. Then I put them in the grow room in the basement. Last year they went inside on October 16th.

See you next Spring.

This one takes up a lot of space in the grow tent.

Got called in to work, but not in the office I work in every day.
The good with the bad. Collected some seeing and moss.

And we are still sideways...
Bnut mentioned there's a bug in the current software and if you use the insert photo button instead of pasting the pic, it won't post sideways. I can't find the post....

Sucks you got called into work.

Found it. LINK

Nice
Thank you.
Let's try...

It works!

Much exitement here....I found this Japanese snowbell at a nursery yesterday....been looking for one for a while.
It had several dead sections on it...think its been left to dry at some stage. I offered 45% off and got it for $20.
I cleaned it up today. Removed the bottom of the plastic planter bag and set it on top of a bigger surface....so the existing roots can extend.
Hopefully it strengthens up fast now.
I'll see how it grows this spring/early summer. If its strong enough i'll do some air layers off the top and middle sections. I can make at least 4 trees out of it....going forward.

Collected some more wild olives . The big one I cut through the middle, going to use the root section for the Tom Vuong upside down olive stump technique. Placed the root section in plastic hoping to push growth faster, if anyone has done this I would appreciate any advice.
Wow! You collected some great olives. Interested to see how the stump project is coming along. Any new growth yet?

The next week here will be in the 70's and 80's. I'm hoping to make it to the end of the month with trees still outside.
We had two nights dip into the mid to upper 40s here in the last 2 weeks and 2 night where they had possibility of frost that ended up not happening.
I usually leave them out until October 15 then bring them in. I dont like having to worry or scramble last minute to bring them in. Have too many other fall chores that need to get done Oct and Nov.
