The last three winters I stored my winter hardy trees behind my shop. It provides protection from the north winds during our very cold winter. First 2 years everything was fine but last winter prior to snow fall rabbits (I believe could be dear) ate all my hemlocks to nothing but nubs. Most weren't a great loss but one I thought had a lot of promise. They ate plenty of other stuff but again nothing of great loss. During a slight warm spell I got a temporary fence in place to make it through the winter.
So, I have been working on a proper fence for the trees to be protected from the animals. Chicken wire about 3 feet up and about a foot below grade. Hope it works.

Speaking of back breaking...
Came over my son's house to help with the firepit. They got it graded by a landscaper, but the ground needed to be racked, weed barrier put down and pea gravel spread. My son got called in to work 5 mins in and my daughter-in-law is due in six weeks...
Well, I impressed myself.

And it's bonsai related because I got paid on dawn redwood seedlings. And a nice meal, which is not bonsai related 🙂

Bought a Mugo Pine in the "get this off our lot" sale at the nursery. :)

It has a huge hole, and some die-back in the lower branches, but the trunk looks as though it might have promise. Sunk it in the wife's veggie patch for now. Will pull it out in the Spring and see what to do with it.

Nice pick up
I see a really nice future tree in there!

Sorry, I know this was posted a bit ago but I've been busy and not much time to keep up with forums.

Sadly after almost 7 years I cancelled my Mirai subscription. Losing my job at the end of the fiscal year as part of the government spending and manning changes, and starting a new one on OCT 6 that relies on commission only, so until I get a grasp of my new income I am cancelling all my subscriptions (except the gym as that is my Zen place other than the trees).

Im sorry to hear that.
I hope the new job goes well for you.

I resisted dropping nearly $6,000 on this huge copper plate art piece. I can't get it out of my head though, so I'm going to commission the artist for a smaller version. This picture doesn't do the color and texture justice!

That's amazing! Be cool to get one done of one of your trees.

Ordered some tree seedlings from Dry Rock Nursery in Wyoming…some for landscaping on the farm and some to grow out for bonsai.

Then I ordered some raffia, training pots and tools from Stone Lantern.

Kind of an update on my upside down olive stump. Collected this olive Sep 8th, as pictured I cut the stump in half, potted the top in a wood box and then potted the root section upside down. The root section has been covered in plastic with periodic ventilation and misting. Today I was pleasantly surprised to find shoots emerging from the base. With green shoots and leaves now emerging I will leave the plastic off to prevent mold. The top portion of this olive is looking great no wilting at all. Its just the beginning of fall but already looking forward to spring.IMG20250908160647.jpgIMG20250908160816.jpgIMG20250930134147.jpgIMG20250930134245.jpg

I'm back from my internet hiatus. Work has been awful.

Spent last weekend at Wisco Bonsai Septemberfest. Took a Japanese maple workshop, and spent time with bonsai friends.

At the end of the day Sunday we had a discussion around the next steps of a large ponderosa pine with Elle Nieto-Brodnick which was probably my favorite part of the weekend.

lol! Can’t really say I’m doing something, but at least I’m watching. Leaning my daughter hates a supervisor worse than I do. 😂. Nice to get outside and at least watch. The ground is solid red maple roots about 6” below the surface. Hydrangea is out and bulbs going in. Maybe one day I’ll get her into bonsai’s.
