I lost some really terribly grown but healthy maples by defoliating them. How do you know if or when they have the strength and energy to do it?
Were you actively fertilizing when you defoliated? I don't do total defoliation on anything but ficus anymore. Partial defoliation does a really good job of triggering secondary growth and giving smaller leaves for most species I've worked with without the stress of total defoliation.

Cleaned underneath a couple of branches
The lower trunk is now prepped for wiring but without wire I can set the pot down on same level as lower apex. Sits weird and not safe in wind but at least it doesn't blow off the bench. Pot is very lightweight.

How do you store this in winter? Always wondered with larger cascade and wintering them

As with wiring, flex lower trunk how it will naturally to lay flat on the ground. Don't cram it and it will be fine. If not place pot on a clean brick or upside down pot or similar and mulch.
I think full cascade would be easier to just lay flat due to flexibility. Semi cascade more rigid.

Checked on 2 yr old cuttings.

No fertilization. And I did it right at the hottest time of the year. I made several mistake.

They might have also been suffering a little root rot. 🤷‍♂️

Rounded 2, defoliate, prune, root prune and repot an other BRT, approx 26 yrs from small cutting.
Originally styled with Suthin at one of his workshops, many years ago when it was just a youngster in a 4 inch Bonsai pot.
Also a couple smaller repots. Picture #1796 of one of the smaller ones.

I did a thing with a bald cypress…. This will be the biggest cutting I’ve tried yet. So far I’m at a 75% strike rate with BC cuttings. The key is keeping them submerged in water and using a strong rooting hormone. I use hormodin 3

Did this take?

I'm airlayering one right now!
Main trunk as thick as my ankle. I'm scared it will fail, I didn't do any research beforehand. But your pictures gave me some peace of mind!
Mine are in full bloom now actually.
I've never seen them with this much flowers, probably thanks to crazy sunny and warm spring.
I have a massive bush with medium sized blue / purple -ish flowers and a smaller one with massive white flowers. They grow like crazy in my garden, I would call them borderline invasive.
Pictures later!

The large one first pictured in my post was an air layer the size of my wrist. I had another one same thickness off of the same hibiscus tree at the same time. Both were quite successful! You got this. Hibiscus are great!

Airlayering the purple variety.
One with the white flowers doesn't have any interesting branches to airlayer but looking at the flowers I might actually start one next spring anyway.
