Well, I though I bought a regular old Japanese maple...

This is one of the stumps I acquired at the end of last year after seeing the Silhouette show in NC. It was sold to me as an Acer palmatum, but....

I actually love the foliage but would prefer it on a landscape tree. The leaves are a bit larger then the typical palmatum offers, but the internode distance seems pretty tight, so I think it'll work out fine, at least on a larger bonsai. Any guesses on the species or cultivar?

Thanks. The foliage shape is very familiar to me but I just can't put a name to it. I've got the bible of all things Japanese maples, J.D. Vertrees "Japanese Maples"... I just need to spend some time looking. I was just hoping someone would recognize it and save me the effort:).

I would have no idea which one it is, but I like the tree. I agree larger is the ticket. Do you have a pic without leaves?

I'm in the same boat. I was shipped some cuttings that were supposed to be 'viridis' but look exactly like what you have instead. Not sure what they actually are, but I still like the look of them.

Dave that is definitely not a regular Japanese maple. I also have the same and I do not know what it is. Mine also came originally from Growing Grounds. Nice tree BTW! ;)

Lol! I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I'm not the only one this has happened to. The foliage on our trees are very similar but not identical so probably first cousins but not siblings;). It's totally possible they're seedlings that were collected and grown out. Love your tree by the way... that fall foliage is incredible!

Yes very possible. When leaves mature they do look rounder and fuller and not quite so incised. It was tough for me to get it to color but I was able to do so last year. It loves a more shaded location. It scorches quite easily. At least mine did.

I'll keep that in mind. I'm ground layering this one, so it's a grow out year and I won't care what the foliage looks this fall as long as the layer is successful, so full GA sun and lots of feed and water. I'll be sure to post pictures of more mature foliage and compare them to yours... I'd love a tree that has a chance... even a small one... of coloring up like that.

If the Maple was grown from seed you have no way of knowing what it is going to look like. Most seed stock come from the Matsumarai strain and they are very variable. I once grew 125 Maple seedlings from seed obtained from seed harvested from a Japanese Red Maple Acer Palmatum Atropurperum and of the 125 seedlings not one of them looked liked Atropurperum and not one of them was identical to any of the other 124. This is why most J. Maples are grafted.

The Growing Grounds has been growing out Japanese maples along with certain cultivars as bonsai stock for close to 50 years. When I visited last year, the owner pointed out a very large A.p. 'arakawa' his dad had planted probably 40 years earlier and told me he routinely collects the seedlings that are produced naturally and germinate beneath the parent tree. These aren't true to the cultivar but may hold similar characteristics. My suspicion is that there are other "parent" trees on the property that serve as a source for seedlings, and if the seedlings have decent foliage or other advantageous characteristics, it's placed in the growing bed and grown out.

I have talked with Marc (email) the past couple of months, he has been digging up some of these old trees... really nice trees.. out of my price but still nice to see.

If we were talking about Greece, I could definitely say "not a suspicion but a certainty" :D

Again and I know you know this but;----if you want the precise tree as you have seen, imagined, or read about you need to get a grafted tree. Someone sells you a plain ol' Japanese Maple grown from seed you may get any number of trees that do not look like you expect.. The gene pool is so isolated that all manner of recessive genes have encountered each other and revealed themselves because the traditional dominant genes have been cycled out of the species.

Which is exactly why I go through my trees in fall, collect the seeds and plant them. Hopeing to stumble upon one with attractice qualities. Acer palmatum 'Arakawa X Deshojo' anyone?
