We have hard water so I use rain barrel water as often as I can.

Man, it sure would be nice to have that option! I guess I could buy a rain barrel and fill it up with river water, maybe?

I lived on a farm in far west Texas for awhile that had a massive roof over the work yard that drained to two 10,000 gal tanks. Once the rainy season ended that water had to last all year. The trouble came when a freeze cracked a line and we lost a lot of water slowly without noticing.

Sometimes we'd have to pump water from the creek to mix morter for the masonry work we were doing.
