Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Simon Gore. I've wanted to do bonsai all of my life. I started properly in 2020 lockdown and am now obsessed. Bonsai has taken over as my main creative practice. I am currently studying in Tony Tickle's study group.

I collected this hawthorn with a nasty trunk snap from a mountain bike track, here in the Forest of Dean, UK, in December 2023. The trunk was cable tied up, for the time being and potted into Harry Harrington's mix then put in the greenhouse over winter and black bagged from February 2024.

It put out a mass of juvenile foliage very quickly, along with sucker growth at the base. The juvenile foliage is now wilting and blackening (it's not bag burn as there is a mesh frame around the tree in the bag). I'm concerned that the trunk will die back in favour of the sucker growth (which is also very weak).

Do I cut the suckers off to redirect energy back up into the trunk or just leave it? I don't know the best route to take for the health and recovery of the tree.

For anyone interested, I'd like to do a windswept literati penjing with it eventually.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
Simon
