Twisting bougainvillea?

Never had one here climb or spiral as they need to be chopped and brought in for Winter. Down South I have never seen one, even growing up the side of a house that was not on some kind of trellis and trained to it. Glad they don't, :p EDIT as I mistyped

I would however be interested in trying one if there is such a "type"

We have them and have never seen one Spiral but as I said trained, tied, whatever down South.

As Greg I also would be interested in one "if" it indeed exist. @armetisius knows a grower down his way that actually had one for me that blooms and stays orange. He might call her and inquire if he reads this :) But I doubt one does exist

An interesting subject came up in last night's Mirai video.

Did they show the Bar/Lounge area in the video ? :p

Nine months in and your already getting "guest instructors"?:(:(:(:(:(

6-7 years growing bougies and have yet to see any "spiraling"....in fact, they seem to have some of the most angular growth of anything in the garden....

ruler straight growth 2-3 feet long in most cases.....examples posted here are tied off or leaning...

Hopefully it's not the same "guest instructor" that started his presentation by getting all weepy....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Maybe they were confused or had a case of stage fright.....as far as the person in Florida is concerned, can you be sure they are even sure of what they are talking about?:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

yea I have never seen them do that lol

edit: referring to the spiraling pic you posted

I regularly trim straight runners that are 12' long - but not a spiral to be seen. Here is what I normally deal with - this is an example of a bougie throwing growth from a hedge up and through a large privet. No spiraling growth, but clearly with the stiff stem it has no problem using other plants to lean on as it shoots up.

Contrast that growth habit to this - a jasmine by one of our hummingbird feeders...

The interesting thing about that video stream was that he (Juan) repeated his assertion about their vining habit a number of times. It wasn't just that he misspoke once, he diagrammed it out on the whiteboard (pre-recorded) and then made the same claim a few times during the live stream. I have no idea, as I've never grown a bougie...but the specimens I've seen did not show any evidence of vining growth as far as I could tell.

Yeah I wasn't able to stay for most of the stream - but the section I was watching he was really explicit about it. Otherwise I think he was dead on in terms of his other comments about care, etc.

Bougainvilleas make me think of wild blackberry brambles on steroids.
