My wife had this podocarpus in the garden for a while and I’ve been itching to start wiring something so today I cut it back a little to style it a bit (I’m not nearly done with trimming and cleaning). Then I wired my first branch and its secondary branches to create a pad. What are your thoughts on the deadwood that stretches straight up from the trunk and creates that Y in the middle? I’m considering a couple of plans of attack but curious what people may think.

If it were my tree, I'd take it off.

Great base on this!

Hard to see that Y, or the dead part anyway.

This I see....
I'd cut this branch if you are keeping this branch length.

Or here if compacting.

Seems you have some time though.

Thanks everyone.

Sorce, in the photo directly above, are you saying you’d cut the first branch at that point or the shoot at the end of it?

So I had some time today and attempted my first wire and style. It’s in the early stages still and I have some more cleaning up to do, plus I’m still working on some jin and shari. Here is a before after and way after.

Beautiful trunk! I am jealous of your weather. It looks like you could go swimming from the pictures!
