Had a Menards gift card. In addition to some other Menards purchases, I brought home this eastern hemlock.

First one in my collection, I thought I could do something with it. Nothing special. Trunk at about .75”.

After initial prune. IMG_1398.jpeg

Some wire to enhance the subtle movement in the trunk. IMG_1399.jpegIMG_1401.jpeg
Some more wire and a few more snips. IMG_1409.jpeg
I tried to leave some new growth on all of the branches. After reading some posts here on Bnut, I felt safe with this amount of reduction.

Thoughts?

Looks great. I would recommend growing out some sacrifice growth to speed development, as they’ll heal the scars quickly when it is time.
Don’t be shy with they fertilizer and these can pump some growth out.

Good to know. Thank you.

This one has responded to the first pruning with lots of back buds. Today I pruned back to some of those buds.
Right now this tree reminds me of my tamaracks. IMG_1798.jpegIMG_1799.jpeg
