I bought this trident for the base, which I really like. The smaller roots are under the soil, there are a lot of them because it was grown by Telperion Farms, one of my absolute favorite growers. So I know also that there is a very flat bottom to this base, which really makes things easier. The base above the soil is about 6 inches wide, the finished tree will be about 12 inches tall. I am going to chop the tree at the top left branch in the last pic as that part of the trunk is out of proportion. I will probably get a bud there, but I am going to thread graft a new leader moving to the right at that spot just in case. Thanks again Telperion Farms for growing great stock !

Nice tree! :)

Not sure why you would need to thread graft...I think your left branch and lower right branch are spot on already. Just need to thicken after the chop. JMHO

Well as I said I will probably get a bud after the chop. But the graft allows me to place the new leader exactly where I want. Buds don't always show up exactly where you want.

Everything I've seen posted from TF seems to have been grown with such thought toward the base structure of the tree. This is a great timesaver with stock, as you can get going right away on the top structure. Nice that you don't have to spend time just to get the rootage sorted...
Good looking tree Dave.

Thanks Judy - all my other tridents need root work, either root grafting or ground layering. This one doesn't and you are right, I can just work the top without having to worry abouth the base.

You are also right about Telperion. Their stuff is top notch, grown the right way. Flat bases with a lot of fine roots. And I got a free sweatshirt with the tree !

Wow. They really did an incredible job with this tree. I just checked out their site. There is not much there, but what is there is some of the highest quality pre material I have seen. That little twisted shimpaku for $300 that is sold. I wish I knew about this site earlier, I probably would have bought that. Around here, the price would be almost doubled. Also, that larger trunked shimpku is really nice. Might make an outstanding shohin. The price is good for the quality of material.

I looked long and hard at that large shimpaku.

Still kicking myself for not finding that $300 little twisted shimpku before it was sold.

Thank you for mentioning them. I think I have heard of them before, but didn't follow up. Your maple is going to be incredible.

Rob

I am sure they have many more shimpaku to choose from. Send them an email, I know they will be happy to send a bunch of pics.

I was checking out their site recently... My fiancée would murder me if I spent $300 on a tree right now though!

Looks like a fantastic start to this Trident though! Great nebari!

Spoke to Chris at the place earlier today, they have more trees than they have time to post it on their site. I called and asked for a Korean Hornbeam and Zelkova and was promised pictures by the end of the week, as they are having a hurricane.

Sorry to hijack your thread :-(

No problem. The purpose of the thread is to call attention to bonsai growers. Please post pics of what you get.

That is possibly the understatement of the year! I've been up there a couple times and there's so much to choose from it's overwhelming. If he doesn't have something that would fit the bill I would be amazed.

Well I must have asked Chris for the one thing he actually does not have (or apparently grow). A clump style Japanese maple stock :( And my search goes on!

hurricane

i was unaware that Oregon ever had hurricanes!?

we had leftover winds from a japan typhoon that got directed to the pacific northwest.
lots of wind and sheets of rain mainly last saturday.
some people lost power and some had trees fall on their homes.
there was even a tornado that touched ground south of seattle.

But if they ever did have time to do it, I bet they'd have a lot of action. If there are trees out there that are posted, I know that there are consumers to buy them.

I agree. The internet market is wide open.
